Wanting to get a 9mm upper for my AR M4.

Aside from the upper assembly, what other parts are required and needed?

Hammer , check to see if your current one complies with the carrier.

Heavy Buffer. most of the time sold as a 9mm buffer.

As for the magwell.
this is good, http://www.brownells.com/.aspx/pid=42515/Product/AR-15-M16-9mm-MAGAZINE-ADAPTER

I would use pro-mag or new C-product 9mm mags, real colt ones are gonna cost a small fortune and modifying UZI mags can be a pain unless you are good with a dremel.

I was gonna do one myself but after its all said and done its kinda costly. Take a alotta shooting to make up the money saved in ammo.

Still want one bad tho lol.

Unless you have a specific 9 mm lower you will need a magazine well adapter with the built in 9 mm ejector. http://www.brownells.com/.aspx/pid=42515/Product/AR-15-M16-9mm-MAGAZINE-ADAPTER This one is Promag brand and it takes the Colt Uzi type of mag or a modified Uzi mag.

http://hahn-precision.com/Bottom-9mm-Adapter-A9CPRB0402.htm ouch this one is expensive!

http://www.midwayusa.com/Product/586086/promag-ar-15-9mm-luger-magazine-adapter-block Same promag adapter but from Midway USA and about 10 bucks cheaper.

http://www.riflegear.com/p-397-rra-9mm-magwell-conversion-block.aspx Rock River Arms makes a block, exenensive at this place.

There are dedicated 9 mm lowers but that's all they can do. If I was to do a 9 mm Carbine I would go the mag adapter just so I could drop a normal upper on it if I wanted to.

Well I might have found a cheaper idea. Just Right Carbines. The make them in 9mm, 40 S&W and 45 ACP. The kicker is these are made to use Glock mags, AR fcg, and furniture. Price is a little steep but I'm really liking it over the AR version.
