Why can't I find such a thing in production? Seems like it could be a cheap part that could save some money by reducing the number of magazines needed.

I guess I'm just still pissed the price of reliable magazines keeps me from putting the Mini-14 on the short list.

I see your point. I did a web search and there are Promags and Ruger brand. The Promags can be had for about 11 each, the rugers 37 to 40 each for a 30 rounder. I did find 2 very positive reveiws for the polymer Pro Mag brand. http://www.bing.com/shopping/promag-ruger-mini-14-223-30-round-magazine/reviews/35E478A806BDDF4E5003?q=mini+14+magazines&lpp=3&lppc=16&lpq=mini%2b14%2bmagazines&FORM=CMSMUR

But I think the mini 14 is just a copy of the old M14 and both use rock in mags. Old school design. The AR15/ M16 stuff in mags are better for a fast reload point of view and the abilty to switch barrels out plus other acessories make the AR platform far superior IMHO.

as schuetz said, they are a copy of the m14, and the mags can be fed with strippers using a spoon just like the m14. i know of no way for either of them to be fed right into the rifle.

Ruger wants an arm and a leg for their newst Mini's. I don't think they hold the price advantage over the AR that they used to. Combine that with the high cost and limited availability of mags and I don't really see the appeal.

I'm with you guys on the obsolescence of the Mini-14, I just hate to see such an old, reliable design pretty much go to waste over the last 40 years because magazines are too expensive to stock up on. Hell, it just dawned on me that SAR-3 mags are cheaper to buy. I mean really, a newly manufactured rifle shouldn't have rarer mags than East German 5.56 AK mags from the 70's (Weigers).

Somebody either needs to come out with affordable steel/aluminum mags or a stripper clip system to feed it like an M14 with ten round .223 stripper clips. That way I'd be satisfied with having only 5-10 mags.

If they came stock with receiver mounted clip guides, I'd already be saving up for CDNN's 18" patrol carbine.

M14 rifles have stripper clip guides. So should the Mini-14.

The mini even if equipped with a stripper guid like the M1A / M14 (I put one on mine, used only once to test it) Ruger does not populate the market with spare parts. IF SHTF you will not be able to have a supply of spare parts for a Mini. An AR15 you can have every part in the weapon multiple times over. Give up the Mini it's too proprietary. Get an AR15, drop in an Osprey piston system and drive on or stay impingement, even easier to have all the spares you'll ever need.

I really appreciate your input, Scheutz. I wasn't considering the mini as a replacement though, just another cool rifle to own. I'd think it was a lot cooler of I could stock on mags though. Oh well.

LOL, well you can stock up on mags. You just need to pay 3 to 4X the price of an M16 mag to do it. ;)

Also, Ruger factory mags are head and shoulders above aluminum AR-15 mags in terms of their build quality and rigidity. yes they are expensive, but chances are you will never need more then about 6 or 7 of them for the life of the rifle.

I don't trust the Tapcos, and the Rugers are too expensive.

I see what your saying about Ruger's mag build quality, but having only five or so mags is only acceptable to me if I can load it like an SKS or really more like the VZ-58.

Maybe one day Ruger will come out with a budget-minded steel or aluminum mag that spends less money trying to look good with perfectly finished surfaces and bluing.

never saw that set up before.

I was incorrect in assuming that all M14/M1A rifles came with this standard.

heres teh mini spoon, same as the m14 spoon, only smaller.

also takes the same strippers as the ar, so having the 2 spoons, and having your ammo on strippers, allows you to use the same ammo to quickly load either.

i have the same setup for 308. i have most of my ammo on 10 round strippers, with guides to load either my fal or g3 mags from the same strippers.

Do you use the Tapcos or the Rugers?

Do you use the Tapcos or the Rugers?

Both, and they have functioned flawlessly... although I only have two Tapco mags. The feed even my steel case shit without a hang up, although I shot the crap out of Brass with them first so they may be "broken in". I'll buy more for sure. Do I trust my Rugers more? For now yes. But if these continue their steadfast march to being trouble free and they hold up structurally... then that could change. For the cash though, you just cannot beat them.

ETA: A buddy of mine was sold on his first EBR being an AR (great Choice as well BTW), then he shot my 580 Ranch Rifle rig and now he is in the hunt for one of those instead.
