The crappy looking 7 on both sides of the model number give it away as one of the modified-for-import rifles.

Correct, the 7 on each side of the actual model number was done to indicate to George Bush the First that the rifle was no longer a threat to society because the name had been changed, along with that version having the ears of the bayo lug removed.

Having the Poly Tech front sight with underfolding bayo is a nice touch, and the seller makes no claim to it being a pre-ban, so he really isn't being dishonest. It's just that for that price you can buy a true pre-ban Poly Tech with the underfolding bayo as they were truly delivered.

There were a few 56S imported with underfolding bayos before the Kengs secured the rights to the Poly Tech rifles. They were not marked as "56S". Some were marked "AK-47/S, some had no markings.

Also since the bayo was added, the rifle no longer meets the sporting purpose clause of the new second amendment as defined by ATF, so who ever did that could be in violation of 922(r) and Title 27 CFR 478.39, but a buyer is not responsible as the law applies to the converter only.
