But the grip screw isnt long enough . I just looked up a replacement and found a tapco bushing / screw set but said the screw is 4" and the stock screw I looked up is supposed to be 4 1/2 inches. I'm confused I need atleast like a 5" no?

It is confusing because even among factory AK grips, there are some that require a longer grip screw than others. I wound up going to a hardware store and buying a couple of bolts that were long enough, then ground the hex head on a grinding wheel to make it round to fit in the grip, then using a dremel with a cut off wheel cut a slot in the bolt head for a screwdriver. Touched it up with bluing and was good to go.

If I remember correctly, the grip screw is 8mm x 1.25 but you can take the old one in to verify, or bring the nut along to make sure it will thread.

Yea I didn't think of that. Probably because of the different countries of origin? Makes sense. Good idea on the hex bolt too.

Also the pistol grip I got is hollow except a slotted rubber insert that slides into the bottom of the pistol grip. So theres nothing for the screw to grab onto on the bottom of the grip to put some torque on the bolt. Is that normal? Do some pistol grips use a very short screw that just attaches at the top of the grip ???

A photo might be a good idea after reading post #6. If you are using a non-AK style grip, or one like the plastic AMD-65 grips, most grip screws go the length of the grip, and there is a metal ferrel in the bottom of the grip to distribute the load of a tight screw into the wood. Plastic AK style grips are cast with a heavy area around where the bolt goes through to distribute the load.

Just measured my Chinese grip screw at 110 mm.

Non-AK pistol grip, all bets are off.

Yes you will have to find a bolt that will fit, and guessing it will only be about 3/4 inch or so (20mm +/-)

Think itll work or should I try to trade it for a AK grip?

As long as it was set up to fit behind the trigger guard of the AK, it should work. Many people have installed a more ergonomic grip on their AK. Personal preference.

I would get a chinese pistol grip for your AK.

Cope's sells them for like $30 or so. Remember that they are collectables from the late 80's and early 90's.
