I just picked this rifle up yesterday but do not know first what it is worth or what it shoots lol. I do know it has REM 88 stamped on it and Danzig 1890. I am in the military and well this rifle is too old for any of the weapon brains around here any help would be outstanding, thanks in advance

I'm not sure what it's worth? It should be chambered in 7.92x57 (8x57) but IRRC the Germans made two different types of 7.92x57 firearms and ammo and the first/older version may not work and or be safe in your particualr firearm.

Also called comission 88 rifles. Original 8 mm (7.92x57 mm) had a groove diameter of .318 approximately as the bullets were .318" (inches). Later the Germans upsized the standard bullet diameter to .323". Many, most really, of teh old comission 88 rifles were rebarreled to have the modern .323" bore dimensions, however these rifles have smaller diameter actions and the bolts are not as strong as Model 1898 Mauser actions. They therefore are suspect, could be dangerous to shoot full power Surplus 8 mm ammo in. Rem and Winchester also Priv seem to recognize this and their ammos are loaded to very low pressure levels from all that I have experienced. They are worried about somebody with one of these old 1888 rifles blowing themselves up if they load ammo to WWII German specs.

Is there an "S" stamp anywhere on it?? prerferably the barrel shank?

Yes it does have an S stamped on it, so what would that mean? Thank you all so much for the info, I thought it was stamped REM and it was GEW 88. Any one have an idea on what bullet it would fire and what would be the value? The bore looks great and for the age so does the rest of the rifle as far as i can tell.

i'd slug the bore and go from there, IF you'd plan on shooting it I would stick with lower pressure loads.

I got to shoot my GEW 88 this weekend it was 8 MM and it shoots really well for a gun over 100 years old. I killed 4 pumpkins lol

Yes they do lol. After shooting my GEW 88 I was looking around and yesterday picked up 3 Enfield rifles, I have a Mosin M44, I just need a K98, and a Garand now lol.
