Hello all. I just was introduced to the world of the AK. Yesterday afternoon a very good friend and hunting buddy of mine gave me one of his AK's. He has quite a few. Any way we were shooting some of them and I liked this particular one and kept shooting it over the others.

It is a Romanian WASR 10 from what I gather on the info on it. It is a real nice shooter and functions smoothly. Eats any ammo we put in it but it's the cheap Tula so it's about a pie plate group at 100 yds. I was wondering if some of you guys could give me more info from photos as soon as I could get some?

Looking forward to gleaning some knowledge from you all and seems you have a real good site here.

Welcome to the group !!! :welcome:

The WASR-10 in many versions have been imported since about 1999. They are ATF approved because they enter with narrow mag openings that only accept single stack mags. This makes them approved under the sporting purpose clause of the new ATF second amendment. After importation, either the importer, distributer or sometimes the final seller opens the mag well to accept standard AK mags. To do this without violating the sporting purpose clause, they then must reduce the imported parts count to ten or less. This is usually done by replacing the trigger group and pistol grip, along with either replacing the gas piston, or using a US made mag, and if the barrel is threaded, a US made muzzle device. These useless changes maintain the rifle as an angelic device incapable of doing any harm.

Hard to believe that a government would mandate a parts count! Ten or less imported parts in a long gun, angelic. Eleven and it becomes an evil baby killing "assault weapon". See US Title 18, 922(r) or Title 27 CFR 478.39 for the whole stupidity. They are listied on the ATF website, with Title 27 under "Codified Regulations".

Yep, gave it to me to keep. It's mine. We have been friends for 20 years and hunt and fish and hang out all the time. He's the brother I never had.

"Remember "the first one is free" when it comes to addictions" My addiction is the AR's, I'm not going to say how many I have but I've purchased 3 in July. They just seem to talk to me when I walk by, take me home please..... I always was a sucker for a pretty face.

Ok gonna try to post up a few photos so any info from them is appreciated.

Very nice!

You guys need a cousin or old crazy uncle?

I believe the pins are for reinforcement of the laminated wood used in those parts of the stock

My wood looks a little neglected on my AK, thinking of doing a little spiffying up. I'm thinking of applying some tru oil to it. It does not appear to have anything on it right now. Wood feels rough and oily like it has cosmoline on it. Whats a good way to clean up the wood without sanding? Should I use soap & water or some other cleanser?

Looking at your pictures allows me to add that your rifle was built in Romania using an ATF approved receiver, and the parts from an older but never issued rifle from 1971. Actual builid date was most likely within the last 5 years.

As for the wood, while I never tried to clean up a newer WASR with it's interesting "finish", I don't think soap and water would do much, but have to say it is worth a try. Use as hot a water as you can stand. Although I am not an expert at doing what you want to do, you might google denatured alcohol and see if that would be recommended for wood cleaning. Also mineral spirits comes to mind to remove any oils in the wood. Would suggest a search to make sure I didn't accidentally steer you wrong.

Funny because I have finished many stock sets, but never going from what is put on the current WASRs like you have. The really interesting ones were the SAR series rifles that hit the USA the same time the original WASR did. Their wood was lacquered, but it looked like it was poured on, or heavily brushed on. With some good sanding, buffing and polishing I was able to work miracles with my SARs, with many people amazed when I told them that glass like finish was done using the original factory lacquer and nothing more then a little work.

Hopefully someone will come by soon and give you a better answer.

Oh, and I believe what look like pins in the stock are actually screws that were used to hold the laminate together during the gluing process, with the heads and tips just cut off and sanded flush.
