If your thinking of storing water for "long term" please get good containers and avoid problems later on ....

....perhaps one of the best are storage barrels about $65 but sturdy and leakproof for the most part !

If you use "any" style of storage and you store outside avoid direct sunlight as algae will develop ! Always use bleach to keep things sanitary ! Two teaspoons per gallon ....

DO NOT USE milk jugs as they are thin and even when stored in boxes and piled correctly eventually leak (6 months tops) !!!

Also many people buy 5 gallon water containers thinking that they're good for storage "WRONG" , most of these are for water transport and short storage only !!!

TIPS ; store thirty gallon blue barrels in dark closets inside the home and keep bleach in each one ! Boil your water 14 min. if you have the fuel source when using .....keep drinkable water indoors and keep washing water in lesser containers if you have the means ....

What's wrong with buying distilled water and keeping it in the sealed plastic jug it comes in?

They eventually leak. Not all of them will leak but it only takes one to cause problems. If you have more than 10, I guranty that one of them will leek at about 3 years. I know from personal experence. Caused a real mess in the closet.

Ok, thanks for the info.

Would bottled water do the same? The plactic bottles seem to be a little thicker than the gallon jugs.

I sorry I don't know the answer to that. They're smaller with less weight so the stress on the bottle is less. It might be fine so long as nothing is stored on top of them.

One of my favorite Water Storage ideas is the Water Brick:

Its designed to hold 3.5 gallons of water so its not as heavy as a big 55 gallon drum or 5 gallon storage bin and is stackable so you can use whatever space you have in the closet or wherever to stack it. I also use mine for storing bullets and other dry items.

They are good if you do not have a lot of storage room and want to "steal" a foot or two from a wall (cover with a curtain) or behind a couch.

The company I work with, Shelf Reliance, carries them and I have seen them on sites like e-bay and amazon: Link (http://www.novaready.shelfreliance.com/waterbrick.html)
