I got this off reddit.com. It is a couple days old so there is no hope of finding it again, but the post was something like “This woman came into the shop I work at asking for an oil change and to fix the “slight scratching noise” her brakes were making. This is what we found. After we told her how much it would be to fix it, she DECLINED THE REPAIR. We made her sign a stupidity waiver not holding us responsible since she refused the repair, and sent her on her way.

How the hell is there any part of that brake pad still left?

It doesn't look like there IS any pad left. That looks like the steel backing plate the pads are bonded to originally.

should be fine leaving it like that, you got at least a quarter inch left

I don't understand how they haven't locked up yet. the brakes on my van only lasted about 10 miles after they "went out".

Absolutely, the whole other side of the rotor is still there ;)

And she was only complaining about a "slight" scratchy noise? :oh:

How the hell is she stopping? She must start braking a mile from a stop sign.

I hope that is the only one and the other 3 are fine. I can't belive she declined to have it repaired. What kind of car is this so I know to look out for a car that can't stop.

I didn't know that it was even possible to let a rotor get that worn down! I wonder how many months she was driving the car with a brake problem?

I think we're talking about more than just a few months. Thats not a simple groove that needs turned, that thing had to be throwing sparks left and right. I'm sure it's a hoot to watch her stop that thing at night.

The little Cessna 2 seater that I flew as a student many years ago had steel to steel brakes, but they were only used at taxi speed.

This is awesome!

Wonder why only one side of the disc wore.

I'm guessing it's a '90's GM due to the grease fitting on the steering arm.

The caliper mounts are supposed to move when pressure is applied/released. this one must be frozen. The pad is held in place by the retaining spring.

Not that uncommon when some dipshit does the brake job and doesn't lube the sliders.

I had a Caddy come in to the Big O I worked at in the early 80's with the same thing, just on the inside of the rotor. When I removed the wheel, the inside pad just fell out. The ethnically enhanced owner declined any repairs and asked if I could put the pad back in, which I did, installed the wheel and off he went!
