Welcome to Klub Kalashnikov, coralsnake. :)

Now you need to do some light sanding on that laminated stock & grips, & put a nice stain on 'em.

thanks for the welcome !!!

i love this gun and i did think about staining it but not sure what color i would want, i kinda like the light color it has now. a friend wanted me to go all black with aftermarket parts, but i like the wood so thats why i added the bi pod lug. the only thing i really want to change is the pistol grip, probobly going to get the mako group ergonomic pistol grip.

AKs were known for their glossy wood. You might think about just using a gloss clear coat over your wood. I agree that the light color looks nice, and gloss is just my personal favorite. I have an SAR-1 and SAR-3 that I took the factory heavy lacquer coating to a glass like gloss that most people that see them can't believe that the lacquer is factory, with the finish and sheen just something I spent the time doing.

The nice thing about the AK/AKM is there are so many aftermarket parts available, and if you stick with parts that don't require modifications, you can go all the way from reserved, which is keeping what you have (which I feel look fine) to M4 style collapsible stock and handguards with enough rails to make AMTRAC happy! And all just bolt or slide on with no mods required.

They are so much fun, and if you are not careful, can get expensive as you build something that is your special one of a kind.

PS, I agree with you that wood furniture is what should be on the average AK/AKM.

Where in NY are you? I'm in Western NY (Kenmore (suburb of Buffalo)).

If you're in my area I know a REALLY nice outdoor shooting range for you to see.
