I swapped into a ‘new’ 2008 WASR-10/63. It’s the basic Romanian AK with the plain, threaded muzzle with a nut on it. The wood is ugly by any standards. Its biggest asset is the G2 trigger which breaks right at 4 pounds.

The front sight base was too crooked to attain zero so I spent the last couple of days ironing that out. I finally got a decent rough-zero with the index marks on the front sight aligned. I also recrowned the muzzle while I had it apart. It’s shooting real well now; these are three rounds of Wolf FMJ at 100 yards, fired while adjusting the windage. This stuff has never been particularly accurate in my rifles, but this one grouped it in 2 MOA when I didn’t screw anything up. I simply can’t shoot stock AK sights any better than that.

When I got the zero pretty close I moved back to the edge of the field, or about 190 yards. I had three rounds of Wolf FMJ left so I fired them at an 8” bull. One of them didn’t feel right and I’m assuming that is the one that landed left; the gun was shooting a froghair right at 100. The two rounds at five o’clock tell me the rifle is probably outshooting me.

I’ll probably add some better irons and a siderail that puts the glass over the bore. I’ll have to scope it at some point, to tell how well it’s shooting. A stock configured to fit a full-grown human would help immensely. The best shooting FMJ I’ve used is Barnaul Silver Bear, so some of that is on the ‘get’ list.

It ran through about 100 rounds of Wolf ball & HP w/o any malfs; but being an AK, I'd expect that. I’m real satisfied with this gun.… except for one sharp edge on the dustcover. Sumbich bit me. ;)

Welcome to the group !!! :welcome:

I too have found some sharp edges on various AKs. Have dremel, will fix!

Many people have found that after figuring out how their AK variant likes to be aimed their AK/AKM will shoot pretty nice groups for a military style rifle. Mr. Kalashnikov once said he designed his rifle to shoot an 8 inch group at 150 yards, and when you realize what target he is talking about, that group is just find. No they aren't normally tack drivers, but once you get used to them, they can be made to shoot pretty good groups.

As for the stock set, the beauty of them is that they can be cleaned up nicely and stained to any tint you want. A little work and you can have a one of a kind personal WASR!

Don't know if this is your first AK variant, but if it is, be careful, they are highly addictive. If you think that G2 trigger group is nice, try a Chinese variant with the factory trigger group. Best in the AK world!

Thanks for the welcome, imanaknut. I had a SAR-1 about 10 years ago and it also needed the FSB straightened out. It was a good little rifle but it didn't have nearly the trigger that this one does. The WASR's trigger is essentially two-stage, if you take time tof finesse it; three pounds for the first stage and another one to light it off. I'll have to shoot a Chinese variant, if I get a chance.

I'll have a go at applying a dark red stain to the wood that came on this WASR, but it's definietly getting a buttpad of some sort because with my anatomy, it a PITA from the bench. Any ideas on a good pad for a semi-permanent install?

I have seen stock pads around, and have one on one of my AK variants but not sure where to find them. You might check our vendors to see if they have anything. Midway USA would be another place to check. The one I have uses the standard butt plate screws and even has an access hole for getting to the cleaning kit in the stock.

The problems with the SAR series was that the Romanian trigger group was removed and Century install their own USA made part to meet the sporting purpose clause of the new ATF second amendment. They were known for trigger slap and generally pieces of junk. That was unfortunate because otherwise the SAR-1 was the only true military issue AKM ever imported for public consumption into the land of shall not be infringed.

One more range report and then I'll shut up about this WASR- or at least try to. The front post, as delivered, lacked parallel sides and the top of it was sorta lopsided. This was not helping me shoot it well. So I pulled the front post, checked it in a drill and worked it down to about 0.055", taking care to get the top flat and stone off any burrs. Cold blue baptism, reinstall and smoke with a lighter to kill any glare. This of course required re-zeroing and that was accomplished late today. The target is an 8” bull and the group is 5 rounds of Tula FMJ at 196 yards, according to Google Earth. It measured 3 1/4 inches.

Re-crowning the muzzle evidently helped- a lot. No, I can't do this on demand. But when I can do it, if feels really really good.

I hate unfinished wood on any gun because it draws moisture and in this humid country, that's an invitation to problems. So I decided to slap some lacquer on the AK stock. I figured 'Shit, might as well stain it while I'm at it' so got busy with the 220 sandpaper and picked up a can of Minnwax Sedona Red. Speaking of 'Red' my wife saw me fumbling for something to hang it on while the various finishes dried so she poked holes in an old coat-hanger and got me in business.

Ever the comedienne, she said "That would have made a perfect mobile for your crib."

This is the first serious shooting after the stock work and I wanted to confirm that the zero hadn’t moved. I also wanted to see how close Barnaul’s Silver Bear 125 grain soft-point POI was, to the Tula FMJ I’d been shooting. I hunkered down at 196 yards and did my best to stand the tiny dot of the 8” bull, on the top center edge of the WASR’s front sight. God bless my optometrist. All five shots landed in the black and spanned four inches. If you give me an alibi on the low shot, you have four in three and one half inches. That hole at ten o’clock wandered in the during some 100 yard offhand shooting at a target ‘next door’ and yes, I am too cheap to discard a target over that. If you look close it was marked with a pocket knife before the five shot group was fired.
