I miss old project threads from the old site and figured I'd like to make a contribution to the forum with my latest project. I'll update this thread as my project progresses

The rifle is a Global Trades (Arsenal USA) SSR-85C that I bought back in 2002. The Rifle is a bastard mish-mash of random AK47 and AKM parts. The receiver is a stamped FEG Hungarian Receiver. The Front Trunnion is Polish, the barrel assembly is off of an AK-47 not AKM, I believe it is also polish. The furniture is Hungarain but I think the buttplate is Bulgarian. It has a smooth AK47 receiver cover, slant brake, and came with a non-vented gas tube which actually caused a lot of trouble in that the gas didn't vent and blew back into the receiver making the gun filthy to shoot. I recently discovered that the slant brake was shaving lead and was actually bent from bullet strikes.

Things I plan on Changing. I have ordered a new beech stock from IWD that I am going to stain in minwax gunstock 231 stain and finish with boiled linseed oil. I am going to coat the entire firearm in gunkote satin black. I will replace the gas tube with a vented gas tube that I have. It was given to me but I honestly cant remember by who. I have no idea where it came from. It might be Chinese but fit ok with some light filing. I am also going to upgrade the buttplate to put on a trap door buttplate. I never liked the AKM handguard, don't like the buttstock and hate the black plastic pistol grip. This is a shame because overall I think the wood looks really nice.l

I dremeled off the weld that was attaching the slant brake. Global trades was lazy, it was not pinned and welded, they just drilled a hole in the slant brake and plug welded it. The quality of the weld was really shitty with a lack of fusion to the slant brake. The weld was cracked around the whole perimiter.

I found good condition threads underneath the slant brake and cleaned up the area in the weld with a file. I put a muzzle nut on.

I think I like the look.

Muzzle nuts are found on many AK/AKMs so it looks correct.

Is that thing where a mag release would normally be something that the country of commiefornia requires?

yes, it is a mag lock. It is removable and required no permanent modifications to the rifle.

It sucks and I hate it, but not as much as I would hate going to jail.

you still limited to 10 round magazines with that or is it simply to prevent quick changing of 30 rounders? That aside It came out well. Never understood why so many builds couldn't take a part here and there so long as it fit.

The rule is pretty simple,

If you want to go with detachable mags, including 30 rounders, you need to go "featureless" no threaded barrels, no collapsable stocks, bayonet lugs, pistol grips, flash supressors, etc. Thumbhole stocks count as pistolgrips.

Well to me, that sucks.

You can use a mag lock, which you can drop the mag with a tool, a bullet is defined as a tool, and have all of the features you want. HOWEVER, you can not put a mag greater than 10 rounds in.

It blows, but the mods to the rifles are not permanent and at least I can still enjoy shooting AK's and AR's. If I ever have the opportunity to move out of state I can put them back they way they are supposed to be in 2 minutes.

UPDATE 10-21-12

I made some progress today. I blasted the parts which were not parkerized which will be going on the AK and I sprayed them with K-Phos.

Things I learned; Blasting with a 12 gallon compressor SUCKS. I tried glass beads first but that was not aggressive enough even at 100 psi. I then bought 70 grit aluminum oxide and this worked great other than having to wait for the compressor every few minutes. Blast cabinets don't come with lights, this sucks. The fillament in an incandescent bulb in a drop light will still break if it falls over in a blast cabinet. The plastic window cover will get sh*tty fast. Flat sheet metal WILL warp when you blast it so I did the trap door very gently and tried to get both sides evenly. It is not perfectly flat but will work fine for what it is used for. The rest of the parts has enough geometry that they did not warp.

I bought a cheap $10 air brush for spraying the K-phos. I didn't want to use the nice one I ordered for that stuff.

I only blasted in AK in the areas where there was plastic melted to the barrel. I couldn't get it off any other way. I locally coated it with K-phos. I am hoping the gunkote comes out even on top of it all but I don't see why it won't

Looks really good! I love Gun kote, goes on easy, dries fast, baking it makes for one tough finish. I lol'ed at your 12 gallon compressor as I read about it. I had a 30 gal. compressor and I thought that sucked as well. So much so I bought a 10 HP 80 gal. tak that can do 21 CFM at 90 PSI. I can relate to small tank air compressor and blasting. Looks like your rifle is going to be really nice, good job!

AK's done. It is not without flaws but I am really happy with it. the color of the wood isn't exactly what I was going for but I really like the color now.

Holy wow dang. You got one here. That looks AMAZING! Looks like someone rich wanted an AK with wood that matched their fancy furniture haha.

Has me thinking about cleaning my old beater up.

Thanks,

I had a lot of trouble getting the wood to take that much color. I started with the minwax stain prep, and then gave it 3 coats of minwax 231 gunstock stain. It wasn't staining a lot of areas on the wood very well and a lot of blond was showing through. It looked very obvious that i was staining a light piece of wood to look like a piece of dark wood. I roughed up the surface with 220 grit and then wet sanded in another coat of minwax stain with 400 grit wet/dry sand paper. It still didn't look right. I then orded some transtint dye and mixed it in my airbrush with about 12 drops of dye to one container (airbrush reservoir) of denatured alcohol. I really liked the application with the airbrush because I could balance out light and dark areas. I then let that dry and applied 10 coats of boiled linseed oil over about a week. A little bit of color bled out on the first 2 coats of BLO. All in all I am happy with the stock and the finish. I was going for the polytech legend look but the color is off for that. I really do like the color now though.
