I live in NY and ran across some preban east german bakelite magazines at my local gun store. They are selling for $50 each. Is this a good buy considering they're preban (all you can get here in NY).

Welcome to the group !!! :welcome:

Since you are in NY, and the mags are in NY, and you still have a ban on evil firearms and magazines, you are pretty much stuck with them regardless as to the price, because at least you have a statement from your local gun store that the mags are "preban".

AK-74 mags have gotten scarce lately, so the old prices are just dreams. These days in the rest of the country, the East German mags are selling for around $30. Because of the NY ban, most people won't ship them to you, so you are stuck with that is there and the price being asked.

Schuetz, I didn't want to say how just 10 years ago some dealers would pay me to take the mags. Check current pricing, it will blow you away!

Wow. I wish i bought them back then. Thanks for all your help. Would you go for the bulgarian black polymer mags or east german bakelite mags? Which one is cheaper, but still a good buy?

I used to sell some rather exotic mags on this site for sometimes hundreds of dollars each because of new condition and exotic stamps, etc. Had to get them directly from the source by going there and then sending them back to the US as motorcycle parts...lots of motorcycle parts. But that in itself wasn't illegal...the receivers were...!

Bulgarian mags IMO are better than the Bakelites and in particluar lighter. There as also some Tantal steel mags (Polish mags) out there. They wil be old enough to be pre 1994 ban, the Tantal mags that is. http://www.keepshooting.com/ak74-30rd-magazine-polish-tantal.html Link is to a polymer AK 74 mag, says it's a Tantal, can't see the Oval 11 arsenal mark for Poland on them so they could be Bulgarian, don't know. In any case they are $20 each. Despite the difficulty of getting mags shipped to yourself in NY, I would think saving $30 per magazine is worth making a few phone calls to find someone that will. http://www.robertrtg.com/tantalsteelmag.html here you go steel Polish mag for Tantal. $14 each. Has a phone number on the page, call it!

The prices I've seen the E. German Bakelites sell for is $35 lately. The 45 round Bulgarian and Russian mags start at $65 while most of those go closer to $100 with collector's grade even higher.

What is the difference between bulgarian circle 10 and 21 mags?

From what I've seen one has a 10 and the other a 21... LOL, not much... IIRC, it designate which factory they were made in.

Thanks for the link, but they don't ship to NY. That's why I think it would be easier to deal privately.

The Romanians and Germans also made steel mags in 5.45.

I have no idea what they go for nowadays.

I'm interested in polymer. Specifically the bulgarian mags. It is lighter and still real durable.
