Rules are simple, no need for a lot of explaining.

1: Target will be as posted.
2. All rifles will use iron sights only, no electronics, no optics, no lasers.
3: Rimfire rifle. Will compete against rimfire rifles only. I don't care if its .17, 22 or 32. it it's a rimfire rifle it's eligible. (Rim fire, not rimmed case}
4: Battle Rifle. (centerfire only), It only needs to be a battle field rifle, age doesn't matter, if it was used by an army it counts.
5: Offhand only to keep it simple.
6: 10 shots per each match on each target. Picture of gun and ammo posted with the target would be appreciated.
7: Post targets by the 25th of the month to be counted for that month. Late entries will be scored for the following month.

The January Match starts now.

Thanks Grump. I hope we have more than just us shooting this time.:machinegun:

I just hope I can get a few of my 10 shots on paper, the last time we did this it was warm outside and my legs were in better shape. Now I have to stand in 20" of snow. All those rednecks south of the Mason Dixon Line have a huge advantage.

If I had access to a 50 yard range, I'd break out my K31 and see if I can still hit anything.

You can come up and use mine, how do you feel about snow? :coffee: Just bring ammo you can use my 22 and my brothers K31.

Charlie Elliot Wild Life Center in Mansfield, GA. Use to be free but now you need a hunting license or Wild Life Center pass / permit. A 3 day is $6 bucks, a yearly is $22. They have a covered 25 to 50 yard line for pistols and rifles and a covered 50 to 100 yard for rifles. Shooting benches at each firing point. Bring targets and a staple gun, they provide the racks and cardboard backer.

BTW Old Grump, how big is that black in inches. Looks kind of small for 50 yards and iron sights.

old Grump
12-27-2012, 06:57 PM
It is 4 5/8" across the black, the scoring ring comes out to 7 5/8". I figured if I can can keep most of my shots inside 8" at 100 yards with iron sighted handguns we should be able to keep them on paper with rifles at 50 yards. Of course I have been wrong before and might possibly be wrong again in the foreseeable future but lets try it and if nobody likes it we can open the floor for suggestions and a different target for February.

It's going to be snowing tomorrow but if it isn't coming down to heavy I am going to shoot mine and see how it goes. I'm not expecting high scores, if I can put 10 on paper I will be happy. The young sharp eyed guys should eat us old fogeys up.

Target up, light snow, 24 degrees and 4" if new snow on the ground, No excuse but only got 3 rounds on paper at 50 yards. Will change the rules and make it 25 yards instead since some of us are just a bit handicapped and those without access to 50 yards can shoot too.

Thanks for the shorter range. I am not sure the range I go to has a 50 yard line as it is all indoors. The range I went to in California was indoor and had a 100 yard line, but this is not nearly that long.

You always write that and then come back with great groups inside the black. I need to spend some time with you so I can start shooting as lousy as you!Don't forget I have a range in my back yard and get to shoot more than you. Unfortunately my standards are stuck in 1980 when I was shooting at All Army level and was trying hard to make the Olympic tryouts. James Earl Carter finally realized the Soviet Union was an evil Empire and had a hissy fit. I stopped competing after that and never shot in a formal competition since. Then my move to Chicago took me out of the shooting business except for deer hunting and an occasional weekend in Wisconsin. Not until I moved back to Wisconsin could I start shooting on a regular basis again. I still remember how but my skills are sadly lacking compared to what they used to be.

I get more satisfaction out of coaching new shooters and shooters needing help then I do from shooting myself. Still shooting is the thing that keeps me sane. Since I can't work I have to do something even if it is half assed. Now I'm just doing my darndest to get other people to shoot. The more that shoot the more involved they will be against the forces that intend to stop us from shooting.

I can't travel but if you ever see your way to the little hut in the woods I can guarantee if it isn't raining to hard that powder will be burnt, bullets will go down range and if you have a technique problem with a particular gun we can probably fix it.

Thanks for the offer! I may take you up on that some day.

A question on the target. When I print the target it is 5 3/4" across the rings and the black is 3 3/4". I was able to expand the target on my computer to 118% of actual size and it is now 6 7/8" across the rings and 4 3/16" across the black. If I go any larger the rings start to fall off the paper. Any ideas what I am doing wrong?

I copied, saved and print it out from my pictures and 4 5/8" is what I get without doing anything but printing it. Sorry I cannot help but a computer geek I am not. Now if you have a missile fire control radar that needs a little work I could help you but this computer stuff is not a strong point with me. If we have to use a different target maybe we can do that, I just chose this one because I thought it would be easy to score.

I'm gonna have to try and get in on this at least a couple of times. Want to get some use out of that STG44 I got.
I used the copier at work and got it to where it matches your dimensions.
Now for a little better weather, this weekend is supposed to be decent

Got to the range today. It is an indoor range, but they don't heat it. I think it was warmer outside, and it was 41F outside. I am not kidding, I could see my breath. Anyway, here are my targets.

First my Remington 581(L) that my father gave me for Christmas when I was 8.
http://www.gunsnet.net/photopost/data/550/medium/100_14491.JPG

I scored a 92 with 2Xs.
http://www.gunsnet.net/photopost/data/531/medium/581_6_JAN_2013.JPG

For the battle rifle I used my AR15 that I built from a Aeroprecision lower and a Del-Ton A3 upper.
http://www.gunsnet.net/photopost/data/550/medium/100_1394.JPG

Not quite as good, I shot a 77.
http://www.gunsnet.net/photopost/data/531/medium/AR_15_6_JAN_2013.JPG

Ammo for the .22 was Peters, 40 gr. that I bought at Bi-Mart.

Ammo for the AR15 was PMC Bronze, .223 cal, 55 gr.

Next month I will am going to wear my glasses instead of my contacts. It is getting very difficult focus on the rear sight. I see the front sight fine enough but the rear sight is very fuzzy. Well, enough with the excuses. Where are the other targets!?!

Love that 22, sure is in better shape than the one I will be using. If that bullet hole at 6 o'clock on the 22 target has the lead line of the bullet hole touching the line of the 10 you have another point. Check it with a magnifying glass.

I have been waiting for it to get above the 20's because I have to shoot outside. In the afternoon the sun is in my eyes and in the mornings it has been between -4 and 14 degrees and I'm just not as tough as I used to was. Supposed to get to 40 in a couple of days so if it isn't raining or snowing I will shoot.

Come on you southern guys, you don't have the same excuse us snowbirds have, lets see some targets.

43 degrees today and I finally got outside to shoot.
My Battlefield rifle choice was my old Mosin Nagant M38 using 148 gr FMJ Siberian made ammo. My rimfire rifle was my old Savage Single Shot bolt action and a new ammo I had not seen before. Remington CBee with 33 gr HP bullets. I didn't change my sights and it shot to point of aim, I am a happy camper and if my toy dealer has any left when I go back I will try to get the rest of the case. I think from a rest I would have had one hole, with a scope I know I would have had one hole.

That is some good shooting. When we did the pistols I was not even in the same ball park with you, with rifles I might be competitive. We will see how the glasses help.

Nice looking Mosin. I like the looks of the AR, but I miss a rifle with wood. Next month I plan on using my M1 Carbine. No plastic next month!

I also updated my target post with the ammo I used. Forgot to put that in last time.

01-11-2013, 07:02 PM
Shot my Ruger single Six with the same ammo today but from a rest and at 15 yards. It was getting pretty dark and I could barely see the target but the sights were clear and the noise and recoil was negligible. Put 6 rounds in a jagged 3/4" hole with 4 fliers that were my fault. I am definitely getting more of these 22 CBee's.

I had a great shooting day yesterday with perfect light and the end of a 3 day kidney stone episode so it was just a good day all around. The glasses should help you, if it weren't for my prescription shooting glasses I wouldn't be shooting half as good as I am. Really helps when you can see the sights.

First, my Remington 581. Shooting inside with Remington Thunderbolt, 40 gr, conical rounds.

You all done real good there, it makes a heck of a difference when that front sight is in focus. Interesting that the carbine shot better than the 22.

Getting snowed in right now so it may be a bit before I can shoot, I hope we have a few other shooters here who don't have that snow problem jump in and give us some competition.

At first I thought that as well. But if you look at the grouping, the .22 seems smaller, though it is offset to the left a little. The carbine was more centered, but the grouping is larger.

Well we tied with the long gun today, I was zeroed for 100 and it should have been good for 25 but apparently the cold or my coat made me hold higher, or the glare from the snow made me see the sights funny. The trigger guard was beating the dickens out of my second finger because I couldn't get a tight grip. I thought I had missed completely because I couldn't see any holes till I got down to the target line. I nearly wet myself when I saw the group.

Anyway, 1030 hours February 1 2013, -2 degrees with an 8mph wind coming from behind me I used these guns (K31 and Savage single shot) to shoot these targets. I shot as fast as I could because I wasn't wearing my coveralls or long Johns and was freezing my patootie off.

My gun is older, it had more practice...:oh: but mostly I think I have shot that gun so often it's kind of part of me. Heavy rough trigger and hard to see sights and all, I'm just used to it. Thunderbolts have never been my first choice but if thats all my toy store has I don't feel handicapped, it's always been a good plinking round and I have taken a lot of starlings, English sparrows and pigeons with them. Seriously I knew I was having a good day but I didn't expect 6 X's. My second shot sounded half as loud as the rest so I'm guessing it was one of my 8's. I think a quarter turn on your Remington windage adjustment and your score would have been a lot closer to mine.

Target up, light snow, 24 degrees and 4" of new snow on the ground, No excuse but only got 3 rounds on paper at 50 yards. Will change the rules and make it 25 yards instead since some of us are just a bit handicapped and those without access to 50 yards can shoot too.

Some people did not have access to 50 yards and when I tried to shoot that 4" target at 50 yards I only got 3 rounds on target so we switched to 25 yards. Unfortunately I can't change the title. Even with the change up the shooters aren't posting. Where is your target/s? I know you can outshoot me cause I seen you do it.

Tell you what I looked at the original post and the small target and said, "50 yards on that with open sights, no way"! So I seriously never considered even trying. I may have to give it a try if I ever get a chance to go shooting again. There always seems to be something I have to do on Saturdays and the range is closed on Sundays. Down here I'm growing a vegetable garden with winter crops that takes up time even in the winter. Cabbages, Broccoli, Brussel Sprouts and Onions. Probably plant some beets soon too. Then lastly, I hate the company I work for now and have started a job search. Just had a phone interview today, it went well. If this pans out sometime possibly as early as March I might be looking at starting a job near Lexington, KY and then eventually moving. Shit there goes my raised bed gardens. :(

The target at 50 yards wasn't a problem, old legs shaky hands and tired eyes shooting offhand made it impractical. I can't even do as well as I did 10 years ago. I made it offhand because there is no way I can or will lay in the snow so it was up on my hind legs or nothing. The young pups should be shooting the pants off of me but I'm beginning to thionk they all have scpopes and wouldn't know how to use iron sights even if they had an instruction manual in front of them.

Yup, that's a challenge. Come on all you manly studs, beat the old dinosaur. Itorlo64 is coming awful close and I know he can't shoot nearly as often as I can. My targets should be near the bottom of the average not on top.

Looking forward to my own garden even though its getting harder and harder to get out there and work it. Still if I had a chance to sell the homestead and move to the southwest back into the desert I'd be gone so fast I'd probably have whiplash. I don;t know how I would be able to stand it, imagine not having to shoot in -7 degree temperatures or plowing 26" of snow from my driveway. That would be so hard to take.

It qualifies, only sights and caliber matter not make and model of the gun. I assume you have a battle rifle that would qualify so there you have both guns needed.

Stopped snowing and warmed up to 35 degrees with no wind from what I could feel. Light was awful bright but what the hey, Fun in the sun who is complaining. So March is here and here is my March offering for all you shooters to beat. Come on now, grab a box of ammo and go stand on your hindlegs for some fun. At least shoot the 22 if you are short on shooting stuff. The rest of you hoarders need to get out in the fresh air for some shooting exercise, it will do you good.

What I shot, Ruger 10/22 carbine with iron sights and M1 Garand with iron sights.

Barely a week to go to get March targets in and then we work on April. We have any shooters out there? You can use either a 22 or a battle rifle or both, we aren't fussy as long as its iron sights offhand at this target and at 25 yards.

Has a 55 degree day just before the thunderstorms and sleet moved in so got my chance to shoot the Saturday match. Been a long time since I was able to shoot in shirt sleeves and not have to climb over snow and ice to get to my target stand. Used the old Marlin 60 for the rimfire but my eyes are having a hard time seeing those dinky sights in the bright sun. I will see if I can find or make an aperture rear sight for it. Not having that problem with the M1, almost feel like I'm cheating it was so easy.

Glad to see you could make it to the range, Hopefully we can get more shooters in our little game now that the air is warmer and the days are longer. Sounds like a real nice range you are shooting at.

It is smaller than I expected the NRA range to be, but it is in downtown Fairfax, VA. They seemed cordial enough and they actually have less rules than other ranges. No steel core ammo (seems the norm for indoor ranges) but they understand that Wolf is not steel cored and will allow it and no silouttes or human likeness type targets. They will let you draw from a holster with no problems and rapid fire, no fully auto fire though without prior permission. Not to bad. And the price is not too bad for what I have seen.

Well it's half past May, is anybody going to shoot this match before deer season starts and you all get to busy for fun. I had to shoot before the rain hit me but I managed to stay dry, the wind was a bit of a bother but the temperature was nice considering we had frost on the ground the last two mornings.

+100

Nice shooting. I would love to shoot my Garand for this, but all my ammo attracts a magnet so I am not able to shoot it inside. I may have to spring for some non-surplus ammo so I can shoot it inside.

I am getting ready to go shoot the lever action rifle now. I will be shooting this one next weekend.

Here is my entry for this month. First my .22, still using my Remington 581.

This month for my battle rifle I used me M-1 Carbine. I have posted pictures before but I took a new picture with the magazine in. I think it looks much better so here is the new picture.

Maybe we should keep it going in his honor.

I agree that we need to keep it as the "Old Grump Memorial Challenge".

Maybe even make it a sticky in this forum.

Update, I stuck the thread and changed the name.
