I bought chickens and let them free range (works for the yard, not sure about the dog though).

As far as the dog goes, I use Frontline Plus flee and tick killer on my dogs once every month. I've never had a flea or tick on either one of my dogs. They are in the yard and woods constantly. It costs a bit but well worth it!

They're common around here, but I've found that if I keep the grass mowed regularly, they tend to disappear. They seem to get worse as the grass gets drier, too. If you can, mow frequently and water often.

I've never had the need to try pesticides, so I can't help you there.

Ex girlfriend is a vet, she told me about it, also make sure its the liquid as it sinks into the soil and animals cant inhale the dust form of it.

My neighbor has chickens and has zero problems with ticks or fleas.
