T38 in 8 x 57

Here is my T38 modified by the Chinese to 8 x 57 and so noted across the front of the receiver where the mum was removed. riceone.

Very nice looking rifle. When the chinese rechambered these rifles do you know if they did any restoration work to it.

Did you ever shoot this one since it is 8mm.

I have not shot it but thats the reason its out now. I took the metal out of the stock and found it did not have the "D" recoil block so I put one in and also installed cross bolt. Most of the T38 found in 8mm have split stock and I do not want to split this on. As to restoration - the stock is a new chinese type so other than that it looks like any other T38. The bore need a good cleaning.

A word of Caution = always take the metal out of the wood and inspect. Couple of years back I had one of these and was about to shoot it and for some reason decided to take it out of the wood. Good thing I did as there was a hole drilled in the bottom of the chamber - it had be a lamp at one time. I would have gotten hurt from the splintering of the wood and possibley metal.

Who would of thought someone to go to that extreme and make a lamp out of a rifle. I heard it all now. So there was no hole for a cross bolt ? When you got the rifle.

What type of ammo might you run through it.

There was no hole, I have a jig to put the hole at the correct place. I will shoot regulat 8mm reloads. On the lamp rifle, a slot was carved out from the bottom of the chamber to the front hole in the rear sling swivel at the front screw for the cord to come out. Someone spent a lot of time ruining a fairly rare rifle. riceone

How did you go about making the jig and knowing where you wanted to place the hole for the cross bolt.

Here is the jig for installing a recoil cross bolt. I have not learned how to post pictures and give explination for each one. The pictures show the alignment of the bolt - the jig is mounted in a stock with the bottom metal installed so that it is pulled down into the stock. Each drill has a bushing to align it. You drill from both sides, then run the drill all the way through and finish with the square hole cutter. The spanner is for tightening the nut on the recoil bolt. riceone
