Last night I was cruising facebook and an old friend of mine had a picture of 2 AR's he was trying to sell. The posting was 8 hours old but something caught my eye, as I scrolled though. Low and behold on top of the bushy 24" was a nightforce 8-32x56...I asked him how much he wanted for the rifle, he said it was his father in laws and he needed to get rid of it and he wanted $1200 for the package, immediately I said sold. BUT I have bought 3 firearms here since obama has been elected and I knew it was going to be a tough sell to the wife, so I decided to sell a wasr and buy this bushy...

$1200 for this package....The guy who owned the bushy before my friends FIL decided to paint the shit out of it with a REAL nasty THICK paintjob BUT the scope is immaculate and it doesn't appear that the rifle has been shot much. The FIL got it a few years ago on a partial trade and he said he didn't have a use for it...

The most expensive optic I had before this was a regular Nikon and my GOD does this nightforce blow that $300 scope away. I live on a hill and about a 3/4 mile down the hill is a farm and tonight I was scoping that farm out and I could literally see the eyes of the cows. I couldn't see shit with the nikon, nothing.

Then I went to their website and read this story and the abuse this scope took in the sand box. I'm fucking sold. http://nightforceoptics.com/nightforce-stories/
If any of you are fence sitting cause you think a $300 or even a $700 scope is just fine, best believe you would have an advantage with one of these on your rifle.

This is where I'm stuck though...All I have are AR's, a savage axis .223 or a Rem 700ADL .223 to put this on...Should I go with a bigger bore, say a .308? Do I have too much optics for what I have?

32x seems like a lot of magnification for .223. That said I do regret only going with a 3-9x on my scope 20" AR. In retrospect, I think 12x-16x max magnification would have been better.

I'd look for a .308 to mount that bad boy onto. With the current modern sporting rifle buying craze, you may very well find a good deal on a lightly used Savage or Remington bolt gun. I bought a used Savage in .308 years ago and it shoots better than I can with 168 gr. BTHP and a Leupold VX-III. If you have money to blow some day, .338 Lapua would work well with that scope...

I'd agree a .300 magnum or the .338 Lapua would be more appropriate than a .223 chambered weapon. Never looked through a Nightforce but I do have Leupold scopes, one is a 32x benchrest scope. You can see texture on the targt paper at 200 meters with it. With that kind of magnification you aim at bullet holes, not the target so much and really under 200 yards it is way too much scope.

My match AR rifle has a 6.5x20 Leupold on it. Even at 600 yards I almost never went past 10X magnification when shooting as more power only magnifies any movement from heart rate, muscle tremors or mirage. 10X was still sufficient that I could see the score rings on the target with no problem.

That was a heck of a find. If it had been me I would have sold the AR and kept the scope then bought a nice 308 bolt gun.

Seriously, though .308 is almost too little for that kind of scope.

The guy who bought it says he was going to put it on his .338. He says he is trying to get his dept to go with nightforce.
