what is it that y'all use to highlight weapons markings when you take pics? you know, the white stuff that fills the letters and such?

mriddick used white paint in a recent post and that looked like it was quite a mess and not the best of ideas, so that got me thinking about it. i never can get good pics of receiver markings.

White Crayon... The same crayon has been on my M4 for about 3+ years!

Brownells offers an acrylic pencil just for that. You cover the area with it, wipe off the excess and the let it dry. It holds up pretty well but eventually oils will remove it.

Should have asked the ex girlfriend for some lol.

I might try some crayons now and see how it works out.

Just took a close-up of the "CRAYOLA" custom markings... :p

The flash caused it to not have the right contrast, but you get the idea... Crayons result in a clean fill, and it's easy to wipe the surface off.

People who want the markings to STAY filled will use some lacquer model paint, and let it dry. Crayons or lacquer sticks work fine, but probably won't stand up to vigorous use and cleaning.

I use the acrylic pencils. they are soluble with mineral spirits so they are easy to work with.
Sure they can be removed when cleaning. but it would have to be done intentionally and would take some work.

RJ- What is up with your extended bolt release ?

I'm intrigued......

I was wondering who the first to ask would be... :p

That's a MagPul BAD (Battery Assist Device). I allows me to drop the bolt on a fresh magazine, with my trigger finger. I don't have to move my palm or thumb up to the bolt release after throwing a fresh mag in. It's unbelievably fast, and when I pick up an AR that doesn't have one, I sooooo miss it! ;)

Cool.

I take it you've used it for quite awhile now.......so no shortcomings ?

How much does it run ?

I've used it since they came out, which I think was early 2009. They run at around $30 and make the extremely ergonomic AR platform, even more user-friendly.

how they attach the BAD lever?

You can see the torx screw on the face. There's a small, fitted plate in the back to which the front connects.

Grease or oil pencils. I find they're softer than crayons & fill the grooves better.

White or red KG Gun Kote and a tooth pick. Baked on they never come off.

Crayons

1 pick your color
2 clean your firearm
3 clean the area again with rubbing alcohol
4 warm up the area to apply crayon with a hair dryer
5 melt crayon into groves
6 wipe off excess with straight edge of card board. may take a few passes
7 wipe areas undesired crayon remains with news paper or phone book page as they absorb the wax pretty good.
8 buff with rag

never worry about it not looking good because hoppes9 takes it right off.

If you do it to a slide of a side arm, it might get hot sitting in the sun on the bench at the range in the summer or if you shoot the snot of it you might get the slide hot enough to melt it. If that happens start at step one again and if you really did not already figure that part out, hit yourself in the head repeatedly with a large hammer.

I use Liquid Paper with the ball point pen style applicator. Fill in the lettering, wipe off the access, let dry a couple of minutes. Inexpensive and it's not permanent, but it don't wear off either. I've highlighted the lettering on a lot of guns using this method.
