ABA At It Again

KAREN LEE TORRE

It was that time of year again – August – for the American Bar Association’s annual meeting, and time for me to again note that the ABA is guilty of false advertising as the “the voice of the legal profession” in America. Overrun and still controlled by left-wing political activists with JD degrees, and with only 29 percent of the nation’s lawyers bothering to belong to it, the ABA dishonestly continues to claim that mantle.

Last year, my column on the 2009 ABA convention drew the attention and strong rebuke of ABA President Carolyn Lamm. Lamm’s umbrage was not unexpected. But she expectedly cherry-picked a select few of the ABA’s apolitical (and legitimate) initiatives in a rather lame effort to undercut the notion that it is fundamentally a left-wing policy lobby.

So what if, as Lamm noted, the ABA “supported” members of our state bar who successfully challenged an executive branch raid on Connecticut’s client security fund? And so what if, in between being a shill for the Democratic Party and its policy agenda, the ABA might actually do something appropriate, like point out a typo in the bankruptcy code?
