Senate Judiciary Committee to Hold
Hearing on S. 941 (BATFE Reform) Next Tuesday

Wednesday, September 08, 2010

On Tuesday, September 14, the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee will hold a hearing on reforming current regulation of commerce in firearms--especially in the area of dealer licensing and oversight--by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.
The hearing will focus on S. 941, the "Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives Reform and Firearms Modernization Act" sponsored by Senators Mike Crapo (R-ID) and Patrick Leahy (D-VT). Congressmen Steve King (R-IA) and Zack Space (D-OH) have introduced a companion bill — H.R. 2296 — in the U.S. House and it has 240 cosponsors. The bills would roll back unnecessary restrictions, correct errors, and codify longstanding congressional policies in the firearms arena. These bipartisan bills are a vital step to modernize and improve BATFE operations.

Of highest importance, S. 941 and H.R. 2296 totally rewrite the system of administrative penalties for licensed dealers, manufacturers and importers of firearms. Currently, for most violations, BATFE can only give a federal firearms license (FFL) holder a warning, or revoke his license.

This is great news! The BATF will soon be able to make up even more bullshit laws on the fly!

Got an alert about this from the VCDL. They researched it and spoke to the NRA and are viewing it as a potentially Pro-Gun item as it is intended to "reform the BATFE"

http://www.nraila.org/Issues/FactSheets/Read.aspx?id=251&issue=28

One example of the reform would be the ability to fine an FFL for a violation. Currently the BATFE can only issue a warning or completely revoke the license. This reform would also provide for appeals of BATFE rulings to a judge instead of back to the BATFE itself.

It would also allow barrels and receivers to be imported again, at least for repair or replacement purposes.

Before rejecting this as a bad think more investigation might be warranted

I saw that the other day but it didn't say what was going to be discused. Thanks for the info. I think this will be one of those lets wait and see what this turns out to be. On the surface it sounds good but, I am so untrusting of congress that I doubt anything they will do these days will be for the best. While the ATF certianly needs an over haul I don't think the current leadership in washington are the people to do it.

It seems the Brady Group has a 'slightly' different opinion.

You just know that if the Brady Bunch is against it, it must be good for the 2A

Really? When is the last time the BATF did anything in the interest of the people? And the NRA? The NRA that is backing Harry Reid's re-election campaign?

Pull your head out of the sand man.

The NRA did change their mind.

What was that about a buried appendage?

So how about posting the negatives in the proposed legislation? I never said the BATFE "did anything in the interest of the people". All I did was point out some possible positives in what is being proposed/ discussed. Take it, leave it or discuss it. So for you're doing none of those things.
