A little background, I am going to be using a Marlin 30as rifle so it has a microgroove bbl. I have been advised of the IMR 3031 powder as being one of the best for this cartridge, I have a ton of range pickup once fired 30-30 brass all winchester brand. So what I am curious is what would the best bullet be to start out with. I was thinking 150 grain as a weight but what brand or type? Should I just start right out with the new soft pointy tip ones made for lever action rifles? Or should I start with something more traditional, I will be doing a lot of target practice at the gun club and white tail deer hunting in the fall. Coyote slaying all year round.

Secondly any primer preference?

Also if you have any other suggestion outside of the 3031 recipe? the only thing i have right now is the Rifle and the once fired winchester brand brass...

Can't tell you the best but I can tell you what I use in my brothers Win 94's. Lead RN 150 gr with 38 grains of 4350. I use the same load for all brass and I have a mixed bag of nearly every kind there is. Remington 9 1/2 primers. Never did chrono it but guessing 2000 fps give or take a little. 3" to 4" groups with factory ammo and the same with this load, the best that old dinosaur eyes can shoot with those sights.

Just remember it has to be a flat nosed bullet. Pointed Spitzers can set off the round in front of it. Then again Hornaday has a rubber tipped pointed bullet that is designed to be used in the tubular mags of a lever gun. http://www.hornady.com/store/30-Cal-.308-140-gr-monoflex/ They are called the MonoFlex bullet, better ballistics being pointed vs. the typical flat nosed bullet.

http://www.hornady.com/store/30-Cal-.308-170-gr-FP/ This is a link to their older design traditional Hornaday flat tipped 170 gr. .30 cal. round.

I use this http://www.hornady.com/store/30-Cal-.308-160-gr-FTX-for-30-30-Win/ with 29gr of 3031 OAL 2.535
Getting sub MOA at 100yrds with a Marlin 336. Not sure I would run this load other than a Marlin though.
