The AKM looks good in about all colors. I have one that I bought that had a black stock set and really looks great. Personally I prefer any wood tone, so dark walnut would be nice.

My favorite WASR done by my daughter about 12 years ago. Got a lot of looks at the range, and she was flattered to learn that her idea was copied a few years later by other AK lovers.

Here's a WASR 10/63 I picked up recently. It’s a decent enough AK that has responded well to accuracy improvements, but it had the ugliest unfinished stock I’ve seen in a long time. I wanted to get something on the wood and I ultimately decided to just do a complete refinish.

Before

The stock was sanded to 220 and given three coats of Minnwax Sedona Red stain. Once the stain was set, I added four coats the same company’s aerosol Spar Urethane. Pad is by UTG and it adds about an inch, plus much-needed depth to the toe of the stock. These pads slip off just as easily as they slip on, but an application of Outdoor Mounting Tape between the butt plate and pad cured that.

After
