Thinking about adding a modern rifle to the collection. Something I can put a scope on and use for target shooting, SHTF and maybe deer hunting. Figured 30.06 since I have milsurps in that caliber as well as reloading components and I just plain like the cartridge.

Thought about trying to scope my 1903A3 but figured I would be better off and probably happier with a modern bolt action. Perhaps a Savage 110 or other lower/mid level rifle. Not looking for sub M.O.A. groups or head shots at 1000m, just a useful, reasonably accurate gun that won't break the bank and that I could likely find in a used gun rack at one of several LGS.

I'd really like a Ruger #1 of some type but I think they only offered 30.06 in one model and that may not even be made any more nor would I be likely to find one used, just like the looks of the Ruger single shots.

P.S. Not a deal breaker but I would like wood over synthetic and blued steel over stainless. TIA

Savage

Tikka

Remington 700

Those would be my top three, but any company of note makes a fine bolt action 30.06 with a quiet, easy to reach safety and taps for mounting whatever you want in the way of glass.

DO IT! :D

Why not a sporterized Mauser? I've seen some really nice Mausers that were sporterized quite well. I love Mauser actions.

I have several Ruger bolt actions. No complaints with them. My primary deer rifle is a Remmington 700 ltr. My only experience with modern bolt actions. Last time I shot my .270. I couldn't even shoot 5 shots before it was less than comfortable. Never have shot 30-06 out of a bolt action.

I'd rather not take a chance regarding the quality/safety of the sporterizing. If it's a 1917 or 1903 that started out as a 30.06 I might consider it but if it's been rebarreled from another caliber I'd probably pass. My preference is for something I can get factory parts and or service on if needed.

Savage 110 with accutrigger... You will spend 3x to 5x the money to get another rifle that holds the same groups. Put the money you save into better glass...

if you want new and low $$

I have been having the same thoughts. My only bolt guns are Mosins. I like the look of the Ruger American. Not to hijack, but what is a good scope for this application?

Edit-keep in mind the cost of the rifle is sub $500 when recommending a scope.

In addition to everything already mentioned:
Howa 1500 .30-06. It is basically a Weatherby with a different name. Smooth action, cheap, and very accurate. You can find them used for around $300.
