He has Taken the name Francis.

That explains that, I heard church bells ringing like crazy a little while ago.

I'm guessing it happened, oh, around 1:38 central time ;)

They are still ringing a block from me. I wondered what the deal was.

I hear he's in his mid-to-late 70's. I always wonder why they don't elect a younger Pope, like someone in his 50's.... The way I figure it, he would serve a lot longer and be able to do more.

But, then again, I'm not a Cardinal and they didn't ask me....

This reminds me of a kind of amusing story.

I had two young nieces who went to Catholic school at the time the last pope was elected (ex-wifes side of family)

Anyway, I picked them up from school that day and they were talking about the new pope being elected.

The older one said "Uncle, why did they have the Cardinals elect the new pope?"

I answered "That's the way they always do it"

"Oh", she hesitantly replied.

Thinking for a moment, I asked "You understand they aren't talking about the Baseball team, right?"

"Um, what then?" she answered.

It really is a baseball town ;)

He is 76, one year younger that Benedict was when he was elected 8 years ago.

QUESTION - Wasn't it Argentina and Paraquay where it was reported that many escaping Nazis ended up after WW2?

Sounds like the new pope is a big-time socialist. Saint Francis (his name-sake he chose) was known for living a humble life with few possessions, back when he was alive 600 years ago. Definitely not a fan of capitalism.

He's still pretty conservative on social issues (opposing gay marriage) but he may be open to allowing priests to marry and allowing the use of contraceptives.

Should be interesting to see what sorts of reforms might be coming down the pike.

Catholicism in South America is rife with liberation theology.

My brother has a weird sense of humor...I do too sometimes.

He was hoping Cardinal Scola of Italy would be named pope.

Then we'd have Pope Scola.

New Pope is also the first Jesuit ( I believe.)

Maybe not a Cardinal but you've figured out why a younger Pope was not elected.

Yep, first Jesuit. Heard today that they head of the Jesuit order is called the Black Pope and the Pope is the White Pope. First time in history the White and Black Popes are the same man. There was a member of the clergy on Fox News today talking about the Jesuits as being the "Navy Seals" of the Catholic church. Evidently you can take the preliminary vows as a Jesuit but before you can actually become one you have to complete 10-15 years of schooling as part of the preparation process. IIRC Pope Francis has some kind of degree or degrees in chemistry, phiosophy and theology or something along those lines.

For those of you really into religon (like my mother), here's one for you.
She has been doing some research on somebody name Malachy (a prophet??) who stated that the 112th pope would be both the last pope as well as an evil pope. According to her research, counting from Malachy's time, this is the 112th pope.
Anybody know anything about this???

Lots of info on the web about the prophecies of St. Malachy...according to the prophecy, the last pope would take the name of Peter (something never done by a pope previously, in deference to the ostensible first pope, St Peter...per catholicism...and note, this pope did not take the name Peter)...but the sellers of a book on the subject are making a big play that this papal selection fulfills that prophecy...

At this point, I put as much stock in it as I would a resurgence of Heaven's Gate.
