I'm thinking about getting a truck again after being bike only for the past couple years. Particularly an older Chevy. I'm thinking a late 80's 1500 or k5 blazer. I'll still commute on my motorcycle, but for hauling stuff or if the weather gets really nasty, 4 wheels and a roof is nice.

Any thoughts. advice, or things to look for? Or a place to find then other then Craig'slist?

Craigslist is where I found mine. I try not to give ebay a dime if I can help it. An 80's 1500 or 2500 is a good choice by the way.

I'd look for one that uses point ignition and is carburetted or diesel. Emp might make all the fancy fuel injection and copmputer control go away.

I really wish someone would make a truck or jeep like that today.

Good choice. Inspect the frame for cracks where the steering box is on the driver side. This is usually only a problem on lifted trucks with big tires that don't have the frame braced there. The more rust-free the frame, the better, of course. Rusted body parts can be replaced easily. With you being down south, there are plenty of clean older trucks running around.

Couple that caught my eye... Though they'll probably be gone by the time I'm ready to buy. Thoughts?

I would jump on that K5 for $3000 if it's mechanically sound. Looks clean. I paid $3000 for a super clean North Carolina 1988 Diesel Suburban in 2006. Still got it, although it's different now and a lot more capable. The nice thing (at least, if you already own one) about these older square-body trucks is if they are taken care of and well-maintained, their value only goes up.

Ok, the k5 is a no go. oil leak, and dry rot on the tires.

Cevulirn, the second craigslist link you posted is of early to mid-90's Generation 4 C/K series. These had IFS even with the 4WD version. Is that what you're looking for?

carbs vs fuel injection isn't a huge deal to me, but the second one I posted is at the newer end of what I'm looking at.

georgia is ate up with 4x4 chevys, heres one i wouldnt mind having.raise it up put some bigger mud wheels n tires! http://atlanta.craigslist.org/sat/cto/3664641498.html

one vehicle that iv seen go just about anywhere in mud and a be relatively comfortable to ride around town is a jeep cherokee older ones. but if you get one make sure it has a 318 in it and automatic, manual trans are hard to find if you tear it up.cheap and easy to work on to.

The IFS isnt bad on a stock configuration but the more you lift the worse the angles on the IFS get and you start going through ball joints like underwear.

Mine is IFS now but as soon as I get the dough Im gonna SA the front.

The good thing is that with new trucks in the 40k range its much more cost effective to build and maintain a 3-5k older truck from parts at your local junk yard.

Serious off roaders shit on the 1500s because of the lighter duty rears and trans but Ive found they hold up just fine. If they do break they can be beefed up pretty easily.

Thats what I thought at first... but apparently it has something to do with axles?

Independent front suspension instead of the solid axle type.

The 1991 Model year was the last year the Blaser & Suburban used a solid front axle. Also, the seller is advertising an NP205 transfer case. It is my understanding GM started using the NP241 (shift on the fly) transfer case beginning in 1988. The original engine would have been the L05 version of the Chevy 350 small-block with TBI (throttle body injection). The seller states the engine was replaced with a new GM 350. You might want to find out which version he put in. Same with the transmission. The original tranny would have been the 4L60 (aka 700R4). Just some things to think about.

$1400 + another $1400 to fix tranny and rear oil seals, Nice diesel blazer.
