Hey, happy Fathers Day, campers. :)

Okay, this is an interesting deal. A couple months ago I joined yet another cigar forum. This joint has fair, but not great participation. Anyway, I had struck up conversation a few times with a younger guy from Scotland. Supposedly his father and two older brothers are long time cigar and whisky aficionados. As you can imagine the whisky in question of course is scotch, and the cigars his clan covets are Cuban. As he tells it his father made about a half dozen trips to Switzerland a year on business and would bring back duty free cigars in whatever abundance was possible.

Whatever, what caught my attention one time was the simple statement he made; "that he really had little experience with non-Cuban smokes". OMG, I thought, there are good NC cigars, you should try some. He shot back; "fine, but what?"

Okay this started an exchange of e-mails and I told him; "send me some Cubans, and I'll bomb you with what I can NC wise".

So, about two weeks ago I get an assortment of sticks with no bands. About two days later the bands arrive.

Heres a pic of what I got once I put the bands back on...........or tried.

Yeah, dammit, they weren't easy to replace, especially since some of the wrappers are getting kinda fragile.

The list, according to Euan, is:

2 - Romeo Y Julieta Churchills, from 2008
2 - Montecristo Edmundos, from 2008
1 - Bolivar Churchill, from 2001
1 - H. Uppmann Magnum-50, from 2009
1 - Partagas Mille Fluer, from 2003

Holy Cow, quite a list, right?

So, lets burn one!

Good looking stick, isn't it? I certainly thought so. ;)

Starting off, this thing is kinda harsh, initially I'm thinking; "geeze, is this a fake, has it been improperly stored, what?".

After about 1.5" it mellowed out, then it started throwing some great notes of heath bar and caramel, at one point I was ecstatic! This was as good as cigars get! Okay, I don't believe now that this is a fake, but I still wonder about its storage history.

From the rough point its been really decent, sweet tobacco, leather, herbal notes and an odd grassy flavor. I don't mind the hay flavor, but its different. On the plus side, past a third in, its been fairly sweet, which I like.

In closing, this has been an interesting smoke, better than some, but not as good as the Hoyo's.

I've got a good 3rd of this left yet, so I won't stop commenting. But, I've had better, tho this ain't bad. :)

I dunno kids, I really don't. This stick at times was really good, but, at other times, not so much. :conf44:

Hey CG. :)

Ya know, I've been told that the last 5 or 6 years of RYJ were pretty much mediocre, I just didn't realize how true that was. I dunno, at this rate, I wouldn't buy any.

Remember my Cohiba in Nassau story. Well on that trip I also bought 3 romeo y juliet's. Not churchills and I can't remember what they were. Somehow they got misplaced. When I got home, they somehow turned up in my luggage. Not really sure how they got there. But I happened to have them when my son and son in law were over for a cookout. We smoked them and in my completely uneducated opinion, they weren't anywhere near the cigar the Cohiba was.

Hey, Viking. To be honest, if you had said anything else I would have been surprised. Cohiba is pretty much the flagship of Cuba. RYJ, these days, not so much. It's kinda sad because at one time they were as good as it got.
