The Corps of engineering or the Marine Corps called a corps (pronounced core)

But a dead guy is called a corpse (pronounced corp-s) Is it just the E on the end that makes you pronounce the S sounding part?

Both words stem from the Latin corpus which just means body.

Corps, however come into English from French (Cors), relatively recently (Early 18th century), which dictated it pronunciation.

The 'e' is silent and makes the 'p' a hard sound.

You polish your Polish boots from Poland with boot polish.

You can get baked or raped but when you loose your cloths you get naked (pronounced nake-ed).

English is a difficult language, even for those of us who were taught to speak it from birth, that's why we have to take some type of english for 12 years.

Our receptionist is from mexico and finished high school and some college there before coming to america (legally). She is a very intelligent woman and studied english for 6 years in mexico and speaks very well, BUT, she has a very hard time writing and understanding all of the grammatical nuances of the language.

It is her job to type job proposals and scopes of work for me. I type them up on a word document and she puts it on our letter head in a proposal/Contract format. She is constantly asking me questions about the sentence structure and meaning of my wording...she is convinced americans think backwards :)

Then again, i am Polish, (not polish) so maybe she's write.

Compared to most other languages our sentince structures ARE backwards, thats why she thinks that.

:lmao3:A SeaBoard is a large Piece of Plywood, like you use to board up your Window's during a Hurricane, and it has the Word "Sea" Wrote on it!
