I believe his original motivation was a protest against gay discrimination in the military.

A line unit? What is that?

Troops that are going to be on the front lines.

I am more familiar with the term 'line company'. Because of my MOS, I was originally in HHC, Headquarters and Headquarters Company. I was not not in a 'line company'. The line companies in our Battalion were Alpha, Bravo and Charlie Companies. These guys were what you would hear referred to as grunts.

Hope that helps explain it.
