Apparently this pair of california condors are nesting in the vermillion cliff area, i could have gotten more pics if my digital camera wasn't so damn slow to reset and focus.

Numbers on the wings?

Yea, #70 & 73, i need to find out more about this, there weren't a lot of of people on the bridge when they showed up, in fact we were the only people who saw them. It's because of these birds being there that the sierra club is trying to get lead ammo banned in arizona, or at least part of the reason.

Beautiful pics! Awesome birds!

Been to that bridge a couple of times, fantastic view!

I think the numbers are assigned by NASCAR! lol

So explain it to THIS Californian. What are those? California Condors? I don't know birds at all and I don't pay attention to any of that wildlife, Sierra Club stuff. And why are your pics from 2005?

No, they were taken yesterday, the date stamp on my camera is wrong, i don't know what happened or why it's not correct. May have happened when i changed batteries a while back.

or when my grandaughter got a hold of the camera and started pushing buttons :)

I just found this website that may explain why these birds are in arizona, the place where i took the photos is about 60 miles from the north rim of the grand canyon. The numbers on their wings are from the captive breeding program, these birds were bred in captivity and released in az. the pics are from yesterday the date stamp on the camera is wrong

It's because of these birds being there that the sierra club is trying to get lead ammo banned in arizona, or at least part of the reason.

I hear they have already gotten that passed in Kalifornia. Make me wonder what hunters (if there are any left there) use for ammo in their rifles.

I live in the vicinity of the Hopper Mountain National Wildlife Refuge. I see California Condors in the oil field near my house and flying above town. Largest bird in North America. They have like a nine-foot wingspan. It's not surprising that the're endangered. They're not the brightest birds and will eat anything. Even trash.

They are big birds, the photos are deceiving as to their true size, the bridge i was standing on was 467 feet above the bottom of the canyon and there were no identifiable objects below to give it perspective. At one point they flew about 15 feet over our heads and you got a good sense of their wingspan, of course those photos weren't real good...i got a wing tip and blue sky.

So cool! I've never gotten to see one of those IRL.

(Well, I might have seen one near my house a a year ago. Whatever it was looked like it had a six or seven foot wingspan, and was the right color. But it was too far away for a positive I'd.)

Only in the designated areas See map are lead ammo prohibited, but that's why there are a ton of NON-LEAD ammo for sale.

There are tons of hunters in California left. There are many areas NORTH of this zone where the Condors don't go. You would have answered your own question if you bothered to take the two seconds to research it :D
