I've read more than my fair share of hunting columns and know who Jack O'Connor is but as much as I've read about the .270 Winchester I can't say I've ever met anyone who hunts with it. Back in Nebraska where I grew up folks who hunted whitetail or antelope didn't use it. Having lived in VA the better part of the last 25 years I know quite a few that hunt whitetail and again, no one uses a .270. Maybe Nebraska and Virginia aren't the right type of terrain to warrant using the .270 or maybe it's just not as popular as it was when O'Connor was singing it's praises? Just wondering if the .270 is still alive and well in the hunting camps and tree stands of America?

.270 is a necked down .30-06 case. I looked at it way back in my teens before I purchased my first center fire rifle and decided to go .30-06. It is quite popular based on the frequency of finding the round on sale in gun shops. It does offer a better BC bullet for long range accuracy. I knew a man that used to use it in high power matches and he hunted white tails with the round as well, but that was 30 years ago.

everyone i know either uses the .270 or the .308 to deer hunt so no its not a forgotten round. i've heard though it does over penitrate instead of dropping the deer you will have to track awhile

almost everyone here has either a .243,.270 or 30-06 in every house.

I'd say it's probly #2 in popularity for a hunting rifle caliber here with 30-06/30-30 as #1

Here it's 30-30 and 30-06 too with some 7mm Mag. and maybe .308.

Deane, I knew the 30-06 was the parent case for the .270. From what I've read it shoots pretty flat and for longer ranges was quite the ticket puncher in it's day. Maybe it's more prevalent where longer range shots are more the norm.

I have a Remington 7600 in 270 Win. I love it. Haven't had the chance to hunt with it but I got it off the advice of my father in law, who is an avid hunter. I have taken it to the range plenty of times and I love the ballistics. Very accurate round.

I actually thought you might know that but for info purposes I included that bit of trivia. It's old school Fud, I still see plenty of bolt guns for sale in the caliber. I even won a rifle in competition that was a .270 built by Savage once upon a time, but sold it. Didn't see the merit of getting into another caliber at the time. I've heard of Native Eskimos using it to hunt about everything including moose.

Why on earth would I shoot my .270?

I like my .270. :lool:

OK, that was a really bad joke.

Seriously, I hunt a lot with my Stevens 200 .270 Win. It allows me to shoot as far as I can see around here and know that there's plenty of poop to drop the deer. Doesn't matter if you load 130's or 150's, they both do just great.

.270 is popular. 30-30 is losing some of it's popularity for hunting in a lot of Texas. The 30-06 is as popular as ever. 7 mag and .300 mags have gained here since I was a kid. .308 is a little more popular for hunting mainly due to AR10s. You still see a few .264s. The 243 is still widely used mostly by women and teens; some continue use as adults (.243 is as much rifle as is really needed for Texas Whitetail).

I see a lot of hunters buy .270s as their third or forth center fire rifle and end up using it more than any other.

ill be using one this year because my supply of reloaded 30-06 has finally dwindled down to nothing, and i am in the process of moving all of my reloading equipment. couple with that the fact that i just received about 150 rounds of 270 from ABPT1, thats gonna be my fill in rifle this year.

I carry my Pre 64 270 as a backup for Elk. Actually, I just got back from the range, 06 and 270 had 3 touching holes at 100yds...1" high....guess I'm still good for this year. Funny, POI has not changed in years! Both are topped with Leupolds.
