Question for air force guys....About dishonorable discharge....

Know a guy that joined the AF last summer. JUST got through his basic training, was supposed to join a 'special' air force unit, but freaked out early in the training for this unit. Could not perform something, so they tossed him out of this program and he says he is now about to be thrown out of the air force, but with an HONORABLE discharge. Does this sound like the truth? This guys scores on the entrance exam were extremely high, as he is a damned smart dude....But he freaked out. I am suspecting that he simply wants out for another reason. Question is does this sound like something that could happen? The AF just throw you out because you freak at doing something?

I'd take the whole "special unit" thing with a huge grain of salt. I know in the Navy, at least when I was in for something "special" like the SEALs you first had to have your rate before trying out for BUDS. By rate I mean you had to complete your training/schooling for what ever your job was going to be. For example, if you enlisted to be a Radioman or Engineman you first had to complete Radioman A school or Engineman A school so that in effect you had a job to fall back into if you didn't make the cut plus the schooling you had was used in the teams. That schooling could take months to the better part of a year.If this young man just completed basic training this summer I find it hard to believe he would have already begun any type of "special unit' training.

As far as a discharge goes I guess an honorable might not be out of the question though I would expect something more along the lines or a General, Other Than Honorable or perhaps a medical discharge of some type.

Hmm last I checked all they have is TACP ( FAC guys) and Para rescue , unless somethings changed.



I worked with guys that bailed out of those schools due to fatigue/injury . Most of the time If/when you bail out they'll just transfer you as 'open general' which ='s Security about 90% of the time.

If he has served less than 180 days he can be discharged due to unsuitability. It is not a honorable or a general, it is sort of neutral, except that you cannot join another service.

I have a personal friend who joined the AF back in the 80s. He made it through boot camp and went to MP school. He was not able to handle the pressure and ended up washing out of the school. He was given and discharged at 178 days "at the convenience of the service". Like I said, it was not a honorable discharge but it was also not a discharge due to misconduct. It was sort of a neutral discharge that prevented him from going back in later. As long as the military does not let someone go over 180 days, they don't have to have much of a reason to let you go. I guess you can look at it as your probationary period. This sound like where this guy is at.
