Mine started out as a Wingmaster with a 30" V.R. FC barrel. Picked up an 18" bbl for it a few years ago at an auction so it now does double duty as a home protection shotty and a field gun. Still think I'd like to get another one without the high gloss finish on the wood and maybe an extended magazine. Who else is a fan of the 870?

I do have a side-saddle and flashlight on it now though.

Here is mine. First set up for fun (pheasants, quail, geese, clays, etc)

And set up for the business of protecting the house.

One of my guys at work picked up an 870 Express the other day. Price was pretty good and the gun itself seemed fine but I noticed the trigger was plastic. Made me wonder what other metal parts Remington has replaced with plastic? For a self defense shotgun I might be more inclined to go with an older model with all metal parts. Anyone have an Express that's seen some use?

Yeah, it'll be fine. I've carried and trained with 870's and 590's with both metal and plastic trigger guards. I've never seen one break.

Always like them, but never owned one.

I'm a fan. Don't have one......yet. I'm hoping to take a 870 armorer's course next year if I'm able. Would have to bring my own for the class. My plan would be to buy a police trade in and have it be my project shotgun and "upgrade" it.

I am 60 yrs old and have been using 870s since I was 12, my kids(now men) all have 870s and in all of them years I only seen 1 bad one, changed the ejector spring and I still use that 20 ga on squirrels. That was 20 yrs ago. The only other shotgun I ever considered was the Ithaca M37. I worked on small arms in the Army in the late 60s and they had the Winchesters and I learned to hate them because they broke easily because of real bad plastic parts in the trigger housing, granted plastics have changed much in the last 40 yrs. Like dad always said, if it ain't broke don't fix it. I have had probably 6 870s over the yrs all good guns, still have four. and bought each of my 3 boys one as they grew up. They still own them., the new ones these days aren't as pretty though, but that can be said of many, many firearms. 870s are tough as nails, and easy to maintain.

I've probly owned 25 or so various 870's in the past 10 years, with only 1 left. My fondness has gone over to the Ithaca 37 variations.

I just rebuilt/blued an old 37 last week and it almost looks factory new .

My favorite is my M37 Featherweight in riot grip config.

I've always been interested in the M37 but have never owned one. I like the idea of the bottom ejection. How is the featherweight as far as recoil?

ive only ever shot buck/slug/breacher through it. It's not bad for the lighter weight.

I've got a wingmaster that I picked up new a couple of years ago. I like it, no real complaints other than I slipped with the choke wrench when removing the choke and put a chip in the finish on the stock.

I also have an old Ithaca 37 that I need to restore one of these days.

I am having trouble finding the corncob forearm

Sorry about the delay in my response. I need to get new pics. I have picked up a few more 870s since I took this pic :D

I have some long barreled field guns, but I love the Remington. The SOLID feel and sound of the racking is great compared to the plastic cheap sound of the Mossbergs. This is not a slam against Mossbergs, except for the sound. They make guns out of aluminum, alloys and synthetics now to cut down on costs, so they sound different. :D

I'd like to get the Magpul set for mine BUT, I'd be paying more for 2 pieces of plastic than I did the damn gun.

It's over a year later than when this thread was started and I still don't own an 870, probably never will.

Shotguns are fun as hell, and nothing brings the warm fuzzies like launching one ounce lead projectiles.

Get yourself a shotgun, even if you are convinced that they're worthless these days. You'll enjoy it.

Hell, you can even have them suppressed these days:

I own 2 already. My first center fire firearm was a Winchester 1200 Pump 12 Ga. with Modified choke barrel. Killed a lot of; clay pigeons, doves and a few squirrels and rabbits with it. I have a Remington model 11 with flaming bomb arsenal stamp on it. It was my Father's from his military base that was closed after WWII. I doubt I've pulled the trigger on either one in 25 years now. I keep them for nostalgia and should I ever need to knock food out of the air. I have plenty of ammo for them and in as much as I never shoot them, I'm not in danger of running out anytime soon. ;)

I've got the Norinco 98 and Hatsan Escort copies, but a genuine Remy 870 is definitely on the gun bucket list. I need to counter-balance the 4 Mossbergs.
