City considers lifting ban on loaded guns in vehicles

By GEORGE LEDBETTER, Record Editor Wednesday, September 22, 2010

A loaded rifle is a piece of ranch equipment just like a fence stretcher, and the city of Chadron shouldn’t make criminals of ranchers who leave their gun in the pickup when they come to town, city council member John Gamby said Monday.

The comment came during first reading of Gamby’s proposal to repeal a portion of the city code that prohibits carrying loaded weapons in a vehicle.

The ordinance has apparently been on the books since 1978, he said, but only came to his attention during a review of all city regulations that took place earlier this year. “I guess nobody has ever been arrested for it,” he said, adding that the ordinance in effect makes criminals of many ranchers and hunters who come through town.

By: Chris Fankhauser Posted at: 10/04/2010 08:21 AM

(Chadron)-The Chadron City Council will be meeting this evening at 5 pm in City Council Chambers. Three ordinances will be read, with one regarding allowing citizens to carry loaded weapons within their vehicles, having its second reading. Chadron Chief of Police Tim Lordino supports the ordinance currently in place regarding banning loaded weapons, and although enforcement of the ordinance has not often been needed, he feels it is important to keep loaded weapons away from public areas.

(Neb.)-Council Passes Amended Gun Ordinance
By: Chris Fankhauser Posted at: 10/18/2010 06:55 PM

(Chadron)-After hearing statements from both sides of the argument, the Chadron City Council voted to pass Ordinance 1343 after making an amendment, so that City regulations will now be in line with the State.

Chadron Police Chief Tim Lordino clarified what the new ordinance would entail. It does not take weapons away. There is no effect on blanks, like those fired in parades or at military funerals. It also has no effect on private property or those with a concealed carry permit.
