I have been pricing parts for a AR-15 for awhile and hope to have my first build done before spring. Well, as I look at parts my wife mentioned that she wished I would build a rifle with a wood stock instead of plastic. She had sort of mentioned this earlier at a gun show where I was looking at ARs and she was looking at AKs. She kept showing me the wood and telling me how nice they looked.

Anyway, I decided that maybe I would build an M1A instead of an AR and started looking for kits. Oh My Goodness, I will stick with the AR. The only basic kit I found was $1200, without the reciever. The reciever was another $400. I will build the AR for about $600.

Maybe I will look at building a Mini-14. I can still get the caliber I want and it will use AR type magazines, and it has wood furniture instead of plastic. Anyother suggestions.

You might get one of the GB models at Bud's and go from there - install a new fat barrel maybe?

Or, another option is to get some wood furniture for the AR - it is available as I've seen the advertisiments.... don't remember where - maybe ironwood?

Oh yeah - just remembered it was in a magazine - Shooting Times I think - I'll go see if I can find out...

ETA - no luck - but I remember it was about a customized AR with the wood stocks...

The CMP has some M1A kits for sale right now. They were from demilled drill rifles and include everything except for the receiver, barrel, and part of the bolt. They are asking $600. They also have some stocks on sale for $35. I bought one of those, and it looks brand new and included all the stock metal, buttplate, etc.

I looked there yesterday and didn't see these. Where did you look on the site?

Never mind, found them in E-store. Need to see if I can find a bolt and how much that will cost. Still is alot more than the AR.

I think the kit comes with the firing pin, exctractor, etc. So you'd probably just need the bolt assembly. Fulton Armory sells them for a couple hundred bucks, but their prices tend to be on the high side. You could probably find one cheaper if you hunted around.

Well if you want a wood rifle perhaps an M1 Garand would fit the bill. I don't know how much it costs to build though.

The wood stock set on an AR-15 sounds like an interisting deal.
