Its cold as hell out and the wind is blowing around the leaves that aren't frozen to the ground. Ugh. :freeze:

I for some reason haven't felt the urge to hunt much this fall/winter, and temps in the low teens over night aren't helping that situation much. So, I've been reading when in need of entertainment.

I just finished Sailing Alone Around the World by Joshua Slocum. Its a very interesting book written in a style you seldom run across these days. What it is, is Slocum's account of his 3+ year circumnavigation. The places and people he encounters are fascinating and at times harrowing. Highly recommended!

I just fininshed "The Six Sigma Handbook" as part of trying to certify as a Six Sigma Black Belt.

On the recreational reading side I just started "America the Beautiful" by Dr. and Mrs. Ben Carson. It has started out very good. It is a look at the history of America and how our history provides the best pathway for success.

Stayed up last night and finished reading A Voyage for Madmen by Peter Nichols.

This chronicles the infamous 1968 Golden Globe race. Where for the first time a single handed sailor circumnavigated without once stopping for refit or resupply. It really is a fascinating story. There is also a very well done documentary on the race called Deep Water. It can be viewed on Netflix.

Seems you are reading a lot about sailing. Are are a sailor, not like me, but a real one that knows how to use wind for propulsion?

Nope, I'm close to being land locked. I live on the banks of the Missouri River, sailing that would be akin to suicide, with all of the submerged wing dams and the narrow channel.

I do find it to be a fascinating topic tho. I'd like to have a blue water sail boat but at this time its not feasible.

I do intend to build a motorized boat and do the great loop one day. Might slip over to Bimini too if the weather forecast looks right.

I downloaded 3 more books on my Kindle this morning about the 68 Golden Globe Race. I'll be an authority on the subject at the rate I'm going.

I picked these up yesterday. The first two are picture intensive. "Infantry Attacks" is all text.

Besides these, I've been reading academic sources for my various projects this semester. I just returned a stack of ten monographs dealing with the subject of black people during the revolutionary war. Turns out most of them sided with the British.

Few things more interesting than The Great Wars, the Civil War and War of Independence.

Here about 10 years ago I did quite a bit of study on the events that led up to WWI. I came to some very different conclusions than did my college profs.

Just to continue a thread I obviously found interesting. I've finished the following books in the past few days: A Race too Far, by Chris Eakin, yet another book about the infamous 68- Golden Globe Race. Plus, as mentioned earlier, I re-read Sir Conan Doyle's The Hound of the Baskerville's.

Now I'm reading The Valley of Fear, yet another Sherlock Holmes novel. :)

That does not surprise me, not one bit. I think I would trust your conclusions more than the professors'.

When there's no mention of Bismark, you know the lecturer has no clue and the text he's drawing from is wanting.

Oh hey, I stayed up late last night and finished In the Valley of Fear.

Superb. This was the only Sherlock Holmes novel I hadn't yet read. There are a few of the short stories I haven't read either, but damn, there's like 50 of them.

I might read The Final Bow, next, but I'm not sure.

You?

Good way to pass the time when its 7 degrees out.

Matt, you might consider a kindle. I like mine because I can adjust the font size to whatever. It really saves on eye strain. Plus the Paper White version is back lit so you can read in the dark and not bother the wife when she's sleeping. Plus you can down load hundreds of books and easily take all of them with you. Great on vacation. ;)

Not reading anything at the moment. All my spare time is being used to complete a project to certify as a Six Sigma Blackbelt. Can't wait to finish. I miss reading just for pleasure.

Blackbelt in?

Good luck.

Blackbelt in?

Good luck.

Yup. All the course work is done and my average after 15 tests is about a 98%. Now I have a project to finish, which I think will take about 2 months, and I get my certification.

Well crap I'm damn disappointed. I searched for every single title in this thread. Can you believe not a single one was available as an audio book or e book through my library? Its like Amazon Prime only for books.

Buy a Kindle! The Jack London book I finished last night cost me a whopping 99 cents. The entire Sherlock Holmes series, novels and short stories, - 99 cents!!!

I see the regular Kindle, like my first one, is $69.00 The Paper White, that I'm using now, is $119.00, tho I bought mine on sale last winter for $99.00.

I have a Samsung G-Tab 7. There are book reader apps although I strongly prefer the audio books because I can put my bluetooth in my ear and go about doing things while listening.
