The title says it all. Anyone? I need some info and advice on blowers for a small propane gas forge (CFM, head pressure, etc...)

Thanks.

What are you looking for? Recently I looked into hobby metal casting and found some good starting points at backyardmetalcasating.com

LOL Yeah I know what you mean. Actually, it's for my son. He's getting into melting silver and gold from "broken" jewelery and casting it into ingots and other shapes.

Here's a short video of the furnace running with a shop vac as a blower:

http://www.hobbytent.com/other/files/furnace.mov

The shop vac is WAY too much pressure... I had the hose setup to send only maybe 1/4 of the airflow into the furnace.

I want to get a blower that I can attach permanently to the furnace... but I'm not sure what size to get.

Check the video above. I need a blower that's maybe 1/4 to 1/6 the power of a shop vac (whatever that means).

A Blow dryer should do it then.

Well, here's what I ordered: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0016ZO5UE

http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/31J6OvGNS%2BL.jpg

It's a vacuum cleaner motor with a universal motor which means I can speed control it with a Variac or a lamp dimmer. So I should be able to adjust the air from "zero" to "way too much" and hopefully in between will be the right setting.

With product reviews like that I can't see how you could go wrong :lool:
....but seriously, follow up. I'd be interested to know
how it works out

The product reviews weren't that bad... and I'm not using the motor as a vacuum cleaner. It's going to run at 10 to 20% power with a speed control and only suck in clean air.

Anyway, I got the blower from the BBT yesterday and tried it. Works like a charm!

I can have any flame from a small "warm it up slowly" torch to "hell on earth" that turns the refractory bricks red, yellow then white in under a minute.

With the propane regulator and variac on the blower, I can get any flame size and any flame type (reducing, neutral or oxidizing) that I want.

While I was waiting for the blower to arrive, I tried a hair dryer. It worked OK, but at full speed it had just barely enough flow to make a good flame. It would have worked, but I like the greater control I have with the vacuum blower.
