Aimsurplus has these model 1889 rifles for sale. These are Black Powder GP90 only rifles, the GP-11 round will blow it up if fired in the weapon. But hey these are very rare in the US and anyone that really loves the Swiss military rifles should be getting one of these for the collection!

you could probably get away using light bullets and unique/trail boss loads just for plinking.

Probably could use some of these modern Black Powder substitutes to roll your own.

anything under the 900 FPS rate would be safe.

looks like you would have to fire form some modern cartridge in order to enjoy shooting.

It isn't really the speed so much. Black powder burns much slower than most smokeless powders. The small bolt lugs on this model aren't (IMO) strong enough to withstand the shock of smokeless burn rate powders. The GP90 was loaded with a 213 grain paper patched projectile. It achieved a speed of approximately 1935fps. Black powder is said to have a subsonic burn rate and it will not develop pressures like smokeless can.

What with Pyrodex, (very corrosive), Triple 7, Alliant Black MZ, and American Pioneer there are a lot to choose from if you can't find real deal Black Powder.
