That's pretty cool.

And considering the probably thousands of times dolphins have saved people from drowning we certainly owe them the favor in return.

You should check out the Uplifter series of books beginning with Sundiver.

Wild dolphins and sea lions always seem cool as shit, i have been surfing and looked 30-40 yards down and there are a couple of dolphins body surfing the same wave. Other times they fuck with you and bump your feet or legs and scare the crap out of you. Sea lions come off as having about the same intelligence and mentality as your average house hold dog, when diving they come right up and want to play or check out what you are doing, never seen them scared or apprehensive they just get right up next to you.

I remember that episode. The writers are some crazy people to come up with some of the stuff they come up with.

Years ago I used to frequently dive at the end of the pier in Monterey Bay CA just to watch the Sea Lions who would zoom at me and then turn aside at the last minute. Like you said, never saw them to be anything but friendly. That being said, they sure could do some damage to a diver if they wanted to.
