So I'm sitting here watching The Americans, on FX and a Makers Mark commercial came on.

I was gobsmacked, I don't recall ever seeing a whiskey commercial before on TV.

Not strange here. Makers Mark is a regular advertiser as is J.D. We have more ads for "Cactus" Brandy than whisky.

I've been seeing hard spirits tv ads in my AO the last few years.

Nothing like back in the 60's though when booze & cigarette commercials pummled the waves from PM to AM.

They've been running distilled spirit ads for about 5 years or so. Not a lot of them, but they do pop up now and then. I vaguely remember the FCC's announcement about it when it started.

I've seen mostly Jack Daniels, Jim Beam Devil's Cut and Mila Kunis branding her name on a JB cask in my area. DiSarono, Bacardi and Capt Morgan ads also.
