I'm going to try one of the H. Hupmann #2's with a pour of EW-SB-2004.

I 've read some pretty remarkable reviews for these, some even preferring them over Montecristo #2's.

So we'll see here a bit later.

H. Upmann? I've never had one, I try to stay in the 48 to 52 ring gauge range, so lonsdales are not what I tend to look at. I know they're really popular tho, our guy Stan likes them quite a lot.

I've been working on this #2 for about half an hour now, its pretty damn good. I also like the Mag-50's from H. Upmann. I think this line is somewhat under appreciated. Oh well, it keeps the price in check.

There Corona's are a good cigar also. Always prefer the 42 or 44 size cigar.

Okay you people. I'm about 2/3 of the way through the H. Upmann #2. I paired this with a couple pours of the Evan Williams Single Barrel circa 2004, barrel #3.

http://s29.postimg.org/6nwjzarvr/h_upmann_and_ev_sb_006.jpg (http://postimage.org/)

Damn this is a good looking smoke!

http://s29.postimg.org/iagptx3qf/h_upmann_and_ev_sb_005.jpg (http://postimage.org/)

Gotta say; I'm pleasantly pleased with this pairing. Its as good a pairing a RASS with a pour of Rittenhouse BIB.

The EVSB is thick and oily, has a nice balance of sweet and spice and hits about every note bourbon drinkers cherish. At $25 a 750ml bottle, its a bargain buy.

Back to the stogie. These are often compared to the Monte #2's. But thus far, I see them as unique from one another. The Monte is all coffee and chocolate, but the H. Upmann has more floral and spice notes, especially cinnamon. Its a great smoke, perfect draw, no burn issues, construction seems first rate, and it tastes great.

http://s27.postimg.org/iguvghgyr/h_upmann_and_ev_sb_007.jpg (http://postimage.org/)

All in all a great pairing, I would highly recommend both. :)

Checking in from the hotel in Slidell, outside of New Orleans.
Day 2 of the herf. Had roasted oysters and blackened Snapper last night.
One of the forum advertisers sent a nice selection of smaller sized Habanos
for us all to try. Had a bottle of 100% Rye Whistle Pig to sip on.
Today is three huge crawfish boil's with onion, garlic, jalapeņos, potato,
corn and whatever else is thrown in. Expecting 30. Cigars everywhere, of course.

I do proof it down a bit. I need you down here to taste it and tell me what it tastes like.
But, yes, kinda like it. Don't think it was too "expensive", considering it's more then 750ml
once proofed down.

IMO its amazing. I've never tasted anything quite like it. Up front you get black licorice and fennel with smoke, then on the finish burnt sugar and clove. Another trick this hooch has; is as your tasting the licorice the mouth feel seems thick and oily, then as it transitions to the finish you get this feel that it thins out and becomes somewhat astringent, then you get hit with the clove at the end. I really like the stuff. When I go out to buy wings this afternoon I'm going to pick a jug up. :)

Oh, shiite. I used to carefully measure the pour, know how much my eye dropper held at any given level
and put the equation into a formula I found on the bourbon site.
Now, I just squirt some in.......

I like the Bakers quite a bit, and Old Overholt isn't bad. But Jim Beam Rye is horrible, just ghastly stuff.

I've now got 3 jugs of rye that I think I need to vat with some Rittenhouse to get rid of them. Beam Rye, Knob Creek Rye and the High West. I figure if I mix these 2 parts Rittenhouse to 1 part sucky rye, the goodness of the Rittenhouse will mask the awfulness of the jugs I need gone. I'd like to get a large enough vessel to do a couple liters at a time.

One of these would work:http://www.northernbrewer.com/shop/brewing/brewing-equipment/bottling/nb-2l-palla-growler.html

We have a big old Mulberry tree in our back yard. Last summer I got up on an 8" step ladder & picked about a quart of ripe mulberries. Mrs K made a scratch crust & used em for the filling, enough for 2 pies. Seriously, some of the best damn pie I've ever eaten. :smiley31: When they're fresh mulberries sorta taste like tart blackberries, but mixed with sugar & cooked they end up tasting a lot like blueberries. :)

The tree is loaded with berries again now so we plucked, baked, and ATE again, just this past week. :ylsuper:

Summerfest and the Milwaukee PD is actually a model used in special event planning and management training for police brass. Its a pretty well run festival all the way around. Its gotten expensive over the years. Parking used to be free, admission used to be just a couple bucks, food and drink was reasonable. Now its pretty crazy. I haven't attended Taste of Chicago in many years. We used to get a room at one of the nicer hotels overlooking Grant Park every year and walk down for the fireworks, etc. The older I get the less tolerant I am of drunk crowds and the stupidity that usually goes with them.

Hey Stan,

Yes they are. The commercial season is going right now. We are a little concerned about the pinks as we've had an unusually dry summer and the creeks are low. I haven't had a chance to get any fish yet because the boss is out of town and we're working 12hr shifts. When he gets back we'll take his skiff over to the lagoon and drag a gillnet across it. I'll get my yearly supply and gifts in one roundhaul.

Other than being a little overworked, I'm doing well.

I just tried something WAY outside my comfort zone and I have to tell you its fantastic. Now to be clear, you won't want to use your $50-$70 bottles of bourbon here, but this is a great way to kick off a Sunday. I'm using Evan Williams. Rumor or legend has it that Ben Franklin drank these to mediate his gout. In the video recipe below the bartender uses simple syrup. I recommend a good maple syrup. Now I'm going to go find a nice Drew Estate Undercrown and enjoy the rest of my Sunday. Low & slow beef short ribs braised in red wine is on the menu for later. Cheers gents.

That range looks strangely familiar.....

Btw: I smoked your Gurkha Titan just a little while ago after burning some red meat on the Weber this evening. At first I thought it was going to be a tad strong for my taste but was a pleasant surprise. Overtones of coffee, cedar, earth, & maybe a little chocolate? A long Punch Habana, La Gloria Cubana torpedo, Cohiba Maduro robusto, Romeo y Julieta Habana, Ramone Allones, & a Trinidad. I've smoked the Cohiba & the Trinidad so far. The Trinidad I've never encountered before: a long, slim "Lonsdale" style stick, extremely smooth & easy on the palate, just a great cigar. The Cohiba was pretty tasty too. :cigarsmoking: ;)

The cold is all up in the interior on the other side of the Alaska Range. It got down to -59 F in Chicken last night which is over in the eastern interior near the Canadian border.

It dropped down into the 20s for a couple days out here on the AKPEN then it warmed up and started raining and blowing again. All the cod fishermen huddled in port until it blew over. So ya'll are gonna get your McD's Whalers a little late.

Lordy, Lordy! Up by Fairbanks?

stevelyn

About 70 miles south of Fairbanks between Nenana and Healy.

It's cold now, but back in September when I was up there moose hunting and house buying, it was supposed to be cooling down into the 20s at night and 40s to 50s during the day. It was up into the 60s and even cracked 70 a few days. We had to keep the doors and windows open at night to stay cool and were chewed on by the gnats.

In the summer it gets up into the 80s and even 90s. Of course then there are the seasonal wildfires that show up with the high temps.
