First thought that pops into my mind (sadly) is, aren't things like porno titles trademarked?

I'm just thinking "Redskins" is too offensive to be trademarked, but "Jizz covered black anal sluts, volume 4"* would be perfectly fine

*fictional porn title...I hope ;)

I'm actually surprised it took this long. The term redskin is pretty offensive to most native Americans I believe; it would be on a par with the San Diego Spics, New York Kikes, or Chicago Niggas.

Most other pro & NCAA teams ditched their old-time Indian names & cartoon logos years ago. It's one thing to be called the Braves or the Chiefs, another to use Redskin.

I can still remember my dad bitching about his alma mater Dartmouth changing their Indian team logo/name & that was back in the 1980's.

America has a history of racial insensitivity. Are we all supposed to ignore that fact, or do the progressive thing and condemn our ancestors while distancing ourselves as far as possible from their traditions and culture?

The problem is if we don't do the "progressive thing" then we become those who will be condemned in the future.

A history of racial insensitivity isn't a good reason to continue being racially insensitive.

You believe. Unless you are native American......you don't really know. Redskin was never meant to be negative. Like calling someone black, it isn't pointing out something different, just pointing something out neutrally.

I think they should change their name to, "Native Americans of Darker Skin." (NADS, for short.)

Native Americans have mostly agreed that it's offensive.

And of course it's pointing out something different, otherwise it would make sense to even mention it. You aren't going to say "Him, over there, the guy with eyes"..unless he happens to be standing in a group of people without eyes or something.

In which case it would still probably be considered offensive to point it out.

Let's do a full 180 and change the team name to the Washington Palefaces. I wouldn't be offended by that.

If the future belongs to progressive socialists then I promise I'm working very hard to ensure that the future condemns me.

A history of racial insensitivity isn't a good reason to continue being racially insensitive.

Yes it is.

In America you can say what you want without fear the Government shutting you down because what you say is unpopular.

Let me know when people are being truly discriminated against and I'll give a shit. Until then, let the management of the Redskins decide if it is in the best interest of their business to change the name. If the fans want it changed, it'll change.

I would differ on the "was never meant to be offensive" thing. Can you easily think of another widely used slang term for Native American (besides Indian)? It's pretty much on a par with spic, nigga, or other derogatory slang for Peoples of Color. ;)

Anyway I'm not attempting to be PC here. I'll readily admit I'm probably as racist as most others here. I was just pointing out how the term redskin is pretty much of an archaic term nowadays, with negative overtones.

Yeah, I only meant progressive by "actually changing something", not some sort of New World Order socialist plot ;)

Yes it is.

Are you arguing we should have kept slavery?

Even just for the minor stuff though, just because you have a history of doing something that's wrong, that history isn't a good reason to continue to do the wrong thing.

Germany no longer flys the Nazi flag.

Keeping an evil going just because it's been that way for awhile now, just makes you complicit in the evil.

I agree. If the owner wants to use the name, then he has the right to do so. Which he does.

But that doesn't mean the government has to support it by giving it a trademarked status. I recall hearing recently about a band named "Slant" pr something like that being denied a trademark because it was insensitive to Asians. It wasn't a coincidence BTW, the band was named that as a reference to slanted eyes in Asians. Of course all the members are Asian...so..ya know

I do think it's a pretty arbitrary decision process they have going there. But, the government isn't required to hand out trademarks for everything, it's an application process that can be denied.

I agree. It's not the government's business to force them to change it. I don't much mind them speaking their thoughts on the issue though. But it does reek to a degree of unnecessary pressure.

However, due to the amount of public money these sports teams often get to build stadiums and such, I do think the city has a vested interest in this issue.

You can't tell the difference between insensitivity and discrimination?

Waiving a flag is NOT the same as owning human property.

And I do still waive Confederate era flags.

Germany's willful ignorance of its history of NAZIism is downright Orwellian.

UH no they haven't any more than ND tribes find the Fighting Sioux offensive.

In 1968, the National Congress of American Indians voted a resolution against the name. Native Americans have started several lawsuits trying to get the trademark status dropped...going at least back to the early 1990's

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Redskin_%28slang%29

So..yeah, a bit differently than the Sioux feel about UND.

Yes, I can tell the difference, and you are correct waving a flag isn't the same as owning people. But that doesn't mean "because we did it before" is really a good reason to continue being insensitive.

I'm not saying you don't have a right to be insensitive, hell..you can do it just to be a jackass if you want.

But if the idea is to not offend people, then you can't keep offending them while saying "we aren't trying to offend" and come off as looking good about it.

Wrong here. Germans have had the excesses of the Third Reich and the Nazis hammered down their throats since the end of the war in 1945. Probably no other country in the history of civilization has been damned more, including by the post-war German liberal government itself.

Japan is the former Axis power who to this very day, attempts to whitewash it's massive record of atrocities and brutality in occupied China and other countries and attempts to portary itself as a victim of Western "aggression".

The story I always heard was that "Redskin" had more to do with the red war paint that Indians were known to wear before going into battle than it did with their skin color. Also to note, not all Native Americans are offended by the name. I think billionaire Snyder rubbed some politician the wrong way and they are going after him.

You never hear anything about the Cleveland Indians and their mascot which looks way more offensive. They still have the little cartoon on their ball caps. At least the Indian on the Redskins helmet looks way more realistic and serious. Not like some sort of parody.

Are they going to change the name of the Minnesota Vikings because white Americans of Scandinavian decent are going to get offended? No! Mainly because white folks don't get all PC about stupid stuff like that. Heck, they could have a NFL expansion team in LA and call them the "crackers' and white football fans would out of humor buy up all the tickets and jersey's. :lool:

Source?

And no offense but "killing us"? Were are talking about a name change here, not mercury in the water supply. In the grand scheme of things it's just not that important what the name of that team is.

Frankly the name change would probably be a financial benefit. Everyone would grab up all the "redskins" merchandise hoping it would become collectable, and a ton of stuff would be sold with the new name.

You mean self-appointed spokespersons make that claim. How does someone get recognition to speak for "most" Native Americans? Also, who is the spokesperson(s) for white people -- I wonder since every other group seems to have them.

BTW, I have a brother-in-law who is Native American. I have watched several Redskins games at his house and he never indicated he was offended by the name.

Obviously you can't get unanimity, but you can try to get a consensus. As I said at the top....In 1968, the National Congress of American Indians voted a resolution against the name.

If you use the same moral criteria, how can they trademark in the porn industry? Take it a step farther down this road, and what about trademarks in the firearms industry?

Native Americans aren't offended by it. I know because I live among them. They even wear the paraphernalia.

The only ones "offended" are the ones who've bought themselves into the Jesse Jackson race-baiting franchise. They don't even believe the horseshit they're slinging. They're just trying to make a buck off of it.
