Open-carry gun debate surrounds Hometown Fair

Hermosa Beach resident Harley Green and his wife bought two guns this year after hearing about violent crimes that had struck defenseless residents in the beach town.

They learned that affluence and ocean views couldn’t prevent armed robberies, assaults and shootings from infiltrating the beach enclaves.

“Even in these nice communities, you think you’re safe, but gang members come in here and raise hell all the time,” Green said. “You can’t predict where crime is going to be.”

Guns cleared for Hometown Fair

By Andrea Ruse | September 29th, 2010

Though the guns that will be holstered to dozens of people at this weekend’s Hometown Fair won’t be loaded, the debate over the right to carry them has been.

Despite initial warnings from Hometown Fair Board members and the Manhattan Beach Police Department that people with firearms at the event would be arrested, volunteers of South Bay Open Carry (SBOC) made it clear that they will not leave their guns at home, citing their Second Amendment right to bear arms.

Guns at Fair Trigger Strong Reactions

Despite heated rhetoric from both sides, a gun group's campaign to openly carry unloaded firearms at the first day of the Hometown Fair proceeds without incident.

While a couple dozen activists with handguns holstered to their hips gathered on Manhattan Beach Boulevard on Saturday in preparation to walk to the Hometown Fair, two friends were having lunch at an outdoor table at Hennessey's Tavern and watching.

Though the women are both Republicans, they didn't see things the same way when it came to guns at the fair.

Guns didn’t take the fun out of Hometown Fair for most

ByAndrea Ruse | October 6th, 2010 |

By the time local band Thin Ice took the stage at the Manhattan Beach Hometown Fair last Saturday, fair-goers were enjoying themselves too much to notice the two dozen people proudly carrying unloaded guns.

But that didn’t stop lead singer and longtime resident Russ Lesser from belting out his latest song, “Packin,” which he wrote especially for the event.

“Now we are not here to debate their second amendment rights,” Lesser said before the song. “However, we are here to exercise our first amendment rights of free speech to ridicule this group for incredible bad taste and stupidity.”
