ALGIERS, July 24 (Reuters) - Algerian aviation authorities have lost contact with an Air Algerie aircraft en route from Ouagadougou in Burkina Faso to Algiers, about 50 minutes after take-off, the APS state news agency reported on Thursday.

APS gave no details on the the number of passengers aboard flight AH 5017.

Flight path puts it over Mali....Initial reports indicate 116 souls on board

Air navigation services lost track of the plane after 0155 GMT, or 50 minutes after takeoff, the agency said. That means that Flight AH5017 had been missing for hours before the news was made public.

An Air Algerie flight with at least 116 people on board which dropped off the radar in the early hours of Thursday has apparently crashed in Mali, the flight operator said.

Still no word on why?

JMO...Fly plane over hot combat zone and cry when plane no longer flys...Not saying foul play is at hand but it seems this is a bad month to be flying near warzones.


Looks like Raul Castro's daughter was on that plane...

The list of passengers on AH5017 includes 51 French, 27 Burkina Faso nationals, eight Lebanese, six Algerians and five Canadians.
There were also four Germans, two Luxemburg nationals, one Swiss, one Belgium, one Egyptian, one Ukrainian, one Nigerian, one Cameroonian and one Malian

One continent I will never fly to or over is Africa. They basically have no air traffic control as we know it. That is why Algeria did not know the plane was missing until it didn't show up.

We have a habit in this country of believing that because we have it so good, everyone else does. Not that way with international air lanes.

Oh they have atc, just tune in 11.300 upper sideband in the evenings and listen if you've an hf receiver, you can hear several African nations passing air traffic. In English.
