This is a Gil Hibben IV Machete I got off of Amazon.com for $73 bucks... Man is this thing robust! This is a really thick piece of steel that will not flex or bend.

I have no plans to hack my way through a jungle... I really wanted something a little nicer than the small S&W utility axe for chopping twigs/small branches for fire at the camp site.

Even came with a leather sheath.

Can anybody tell me the proper way to sharpen a knife? I think I've been doing it wrong all these years... I thought with the edge facing away from you, you pushed the blade edge forward away from you for one side... flip it over, then drag the edge now facing you towards you for the other side. Somebody told me its the opposite, with the edge facing away from you you pull it towards you for one side. Flip it over with the edge towards you then push it away from you on the stone.

Looks like a quality blade. For a big blade like that i think you made a great deal. The handle looks like a bowie and the blade a straight razor. It is pretty bad ass.

Don't laugh... I'm thinking of keeping out of the campsite now and using this thing in my kitchen. Great for chopping bones and veggies like a meat cleaver!

The curved blade rocks on a 1" cutting board perfectly without the hilt touching the counter... I like that the blade is quite large/wide so that as I curl my finger tips in I let the blade face ride my knuckles for quick chopping of carrots/onions/celery.

I've never been into knives as I've always bought guns... but this thing is perhaps like a first hit of crack. I can tell you right now I see more sharp steel in my future. MSRP was like $150, I've seen several knife shops on line for $90ish... $73 for a new one was a steal on amazon.com.

Researching Gil Hibben, I've found that the real "Big John" version is like $1850!!!!! He sells the design rights to some of his blades... mine was made in China for United Cutlery.

O.S.O.K.

What type of tang does it have?

Be careful about abusing that... The blade is beefy, but the tang is a probable weak spot. Should work great in the kitchen though!

The cold steel machetes are an excellent value for a... well.. machete.
