The hiatus in the rise in global temperatures could last for another 10 years, according to new research.

Scientists have struggled to explain the so-called pause that began in 1999, despite ever increasing levels of CO2 in the atmosphere.

The latest theory says that a naturally occurring 30-year cycle in the Atlantic Ocean is behind the slowdown.

The researchers says this slow-moving current could continue to divert heat into the deep seas for another decade.

I'm surprised none of the resident denialists weren't jumping all over this news... ;)

Of course, further down there's this:

However, they caution that global temperatures are likely to increase rapidly when the cycle flips to a warmer phase.

Sounds like we got an extra 10 years to get our shit together.

Maybe Mother Nature hasn't forsaken us after all. :)

Sounds like clutching at straws to keep the funding rolling in for another 10 years, to me.

And many climatologists are saying we are over due for a solar minimum which could last a century or two...

Climate is a complex process, that's for sure. There are many factors that go into it.

All scientists can do is keep tweaking their models, adding in more variables as they are discovered, and make new predictions based on the new data inputs, and see how they pan out.

Maybe they'll someday find the threat of global cooling to be an even graver threat than warming, and instead of advocating for carbon caps and what not, encourage the entire world to start burning fossil fuels en masse as an imperative. ;)

Well there's that old saying about counting your chickens
have you seen this one?

SCIENTISTS and locals have been left stunned after a giant crack, almost one kilometre long, appeared in remote farmland in Mexico.
.............
Farm workers and vehicles have been forced to go around the area due to the unstable ground. Another crack was reported to have opened up in same area.

And then there's all those sinkholes randomly popping up in Florida, swallowing whole houses...

You do know that of the around 55 models that have been peer reviewed not one came even close to passing muster? Most of the early ones were so bias they would produce a "hockey stick" graph when feed all 1's as data...

Will not work, MIT calculated this +/-30 years ago when the enviros had the public worried about an ice age. They came to the conclusion that if we burned all available fuel (forests and all) on earth in one year we could only warm about one degree. MIT determined the only reasonable solution with tech available would be space based giant reflective mirrors in orbit and in 1980 dollars (IIRC) the cost was about 2 or 3 years gross product of the world.
