My wife has a horse and rides frequently. As the winters have progressed it has been harder for her to keep her hands and feet warm. I need advice on where we can look to find the thermal protection she needs to make her riding as enjoyable as possible. I understand part of this is getting older but I also know technology, in this area, has grown by a great deal over the years.

I have a pair of mittens that are the warmest I've ever found. Sheepskin, fur (wool) on the inside. Add a pair of your typical thermal glove liners and they're good to -50 degrees or better. Without the liners, well, my thumbs get cold. If I rode horse, I'd look for something similar in boots, along with thermal socks.

I have a pair of boots that is rated to -70 or -80 (I can't remember).

I wear just wool socks with 'em, and my toes or feet have never gotten cold.

But I don't think they would be good for riding. They are just to damn big (and heavy too).

Hell I can't even drive my truck (or any vehicle) wearing them, 'cuz trying to hit the gas causes me to also hit the edge of the brake pedal.

I'm positive someone will know of something much better when it comes to boots.
