New York (AFP) - The last known Ebola patient in the United States, a New York doctor who contracted the virus while treating infected people in West Africa, was released from the hospital on Tuesday after being declared cured.

Craig Spencer, an emergency room doctor in New York, appeared at a press conference flanked by Mayor Bill de Blasio to announce that he had been discharged from Bellevue Hospital -- one of a handful of US medical facilities designated to handle Ebola cases.

"New York City's first and only Ebola case is successfully treated. Dr Spencer is Ebola-free and New York City is Ebola-free," de Blasio proclaimed at the hospital, to cheers and applause.

Wow, what was with all the people crying wolf, saying this thing would be worse than HIV and shit, calling for travel bans and other authoritarian measures?

We need to redouble our efforts and send more doctors and military forces to Africa to battle this fucker at the source.

And once the last human is cured over there, we need to head into the rain forests and nip it in the bud so that it never crosses over and infects another human ever again.

Nature can keep playing its little game against us, trying to wipe us out with highly evolved contagions, but we've gotten far better at fighting back over the years. There will be no repeat of the 1918 influenza epidemic, that's for damn sure.
