Greece has 'moral obligation' to claim German WWII reparations

Athens (AFP) - Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras said Sunday the country had a "moral obligation" to claim reparations from Germany for the damages wrought by the Nazis during World War II.

Greece had "a moral obligation to our people, to history, to all European peoples who fought and gave their blood against Nazism," he said in a key address to parliament.

Berlin has already sounded a firm "no" to requests for reparations nearly 70 years after the end of the war, but Tsipras and his radical left party have vowed to tackle the issue.

"Our historical obligation is to claim the occupation loan and reparations," the new PM said, referring to Germany's four-year occupation of Greece and a war-time loan which the Third Reich forced the Greek central bank to give it which ruined the country financially.

It's about time Greece stood up for itself. Those EU central bankers have been running roughshod over the Greek economy, forcing brutal austerity measures on its people, completely gutting everything from funding for police forces to hospitals to pensions to infrastructure.

Enough is enough! Time for Germany to pay the piper. End the austerity measures, or repay that fucking war loan, PLUS interest.

If Greece seriously wants to impact Germany in particular, and the EU in general, it should reintroduce the Drachma, dump the Euro, and default on its EU debt.

Of course they'll also have cut taxes and regulations (at all levels) and severely curtail the welfare state at the same time; but if they did all those things, companies would be flocking to Greece to invest and it would rebound rapidly.

And the EU dominoes would quickly begin to fall.

MX Historically, Germany was a physically divided nation till the 1980s. Then "West" Germany had to reabsorbed "East" Germany and rebuild that economy.

Germany (and don't forget Italy) should pay restitution to Greece, much of Northern Africa, most of Europe, and the US.

Spain should pay restitution to Mexico and most of South America.

The US should pay restitution to all Native Americans.

Oh fuck Greece. The war was 70+ years ago. If they can't get themselves out of a hole it's their fault. Blaming Germany (where Nazism has been banned and former Nazi's almost always caught, imprisoned and often executed well after ww2)for them still being in the gutter is like all these inner city blacks claiming that white descendants of slave owners should have to pay them. I'd rather see Germany turn Greece into a crater than pay them a fucking penny. Germany was bombed to fuck by the time the war was over, and has been divided and occupied by multiple foreign nations ever since the end of the war. They rebuilt and are doing fine. Greece would do well to take a leaf from their book.
