Is this something people should have and if so what? I am interested in the AR500 plate and plate carrier. This is not something I would ever wear on an ongoing or periodic basis but would want to put it on quickly if someone (intruder) is in the house at night. Is the AR500 plate and carrier good equipment and if not what is good.

There are enough bad guys and regular people out there with armor these days, that I'm starting to feel under armed by not having some.

I've seen good reviews and testing videos on AR500 brand as well Spartan armor systems. I've been looking at this set of "multi-curved" plates: http://www.thetargetman.com/product/2-multi-curved-ar500-spartan-body-armor-choose-size-and-configuration/

It would also be good to have a soft lightweight option in case you have to move a long distance on foot, or need to conceal your armor.

I have a plate carrier I bought and then "filled" with curved AR500 plates. Make sure that they are lined. What they do is coat with a line-X or Rino-lining ballistic grade.
It keeps the spalling down to a 0%. What good is keeping the bullets from penetrating when all of the flack goes into your neck or face.

The plates are heavy, you really know you have them on after walking up a single (15ft) flight of stairs. But do you really need a plate that stops you from a 308?

They have lighter, soft armor that holds up to large pistol rds.

Check Ebay for light or thinner plate carriers and plates to fill them. You can get really good deals on plated on Ebay from real companies that make them, not just "Bobby-Joe from Alabama.

Plates as pointed out are more for stopping rifle rounds. Soft body armor should do the job for handgun and buckshot. What you need depends on what you're trying to defend against. Let's face it, most burglars are not going to bust in with a rifle, they'll have a handgun or a knife. BTW, most soft body armor is not stab proof. They do make stab proof soft armor but it is not typical and costs more than ballistic grade soft armor. IMO plates are for defending against agents of a Federal and State nature.

Especially when they have been talking about banning possession lately.

I bought level III body armor from AR500 last summer. I am satisfied with my purchase, but as BISHOP pointed out it is somewhat heavy. I am still happy with it though, because it's some of the cheapest armor, and it may very well save your life in a SHTF situation.

And I've been thinking about a Nagant revolver lately.

So just putting it on the ground and shooting it isn't good enough to find out?
