Tack Driver 10/22

Is it possible? Thinking about hitting the range this spring and perhaps participating in my gun clubs monthly rimfire matches. One of my rimfires I'm thinking about using is my old Ruger 10/22. Was wondering what bargain basement fixes, add ons, alterations, tweaks, etc. I could do to make it a little more competitive? TIA

New barrel most likely will give you your best accuracy bang for the buck. (Pun intended).

Thanks for the responses. The barrels look interesting but I was looking for something cheaper than a $200-$300 barrel. Our club matches are rather informal and only for bragging rights.

If your goal is simply participation vs. victory shoot your rifle as is. Accuracy is always linked primarily to the barrel, next to the ammo. Triggers and scopes are minor in the equation. Free floated barrels also play a major role in repeatable accuracy. The rest is up to the shooter.

if your 10/22 is anything like my stock one the trigger and hammer leave a lot to be desired. If it were me I would swap the barrel, stock, and trigger group as a start. There is a slew of aftermarket parts for the 10/22.

It would probably be cheaper to buy a savage like the one I got for around $400 but it won't be as fun or satisfying as building a 10/22 up.

If you can afford a Green Mountain or Tactical Solutions .920 bull barrel, as Scheutz said that would be your biggest improvement. I think Ruger also makes a .920 bull barrel but I'm not familiar with it. If you want to go cheap, you can do the BB trick. Remove the bolt and tap a copper bb in the firing pin channel with a brass mallet. It removes slop. Also polish and shim the sear. If you have a few bucks, look at the Volquartsen web site and find the 10/22 High Performance Action Kit. Lastly, a Simmons 22 Mag rimfire 3x9-32 scope is less than $40 and should get you where you need to be on a 10/22. Lastly, replace the rear receiver pin with a recoil buffer.
