Took the boys to a couple different gun shops to look at shotguns and 22 rifles.

What I shouldn't have done was pickup and closely look at a Marlin 39A 22 lever rifle. Damn but it's nice. Solid with decent heft. Sharp walnut stock too.

It's too big for my 10 year old, but it fit Dad quite well. It's going to take some discipline not to go back and get it next week, maybe more than I have.

They are considered by many to be "it" for a .22 levergun.

Plus, they're all take-downs. Very cool design.

I need to trade something out and get one myself...

I can also recommend one of the old (pre wing safety) Rossi model 62 pumps. I have one with an octagonal barrel and its a blast to shoot. And accurate too.

But the 39A Marlin easily tops it.

I was just surprised how substantial it was, I don't think a 30-30 weighs much more. Oh and the action was super smooth. I'd say it's one of the nicer rifles I've held, be they .22 or other. I'm probably going to have to pick it up, I'll be haunted by it till I do.

If I wasn't so t-totally damned spoiled by the short throw of my BL22, I'dve kept the 39A I had for a little while.

If they weren't an arm and a leg around here, I'd think about another...

Ain't cheap, was over $500. Which is a lot for a .22.

It is but they tend to be worth it, especially the older ones.

ALL .22s are going up in price since so many that weren't rimfire geeks before are really getting into them to alleviate the cost of shooting nowadays. Even the bare bones CZ bolt actions are touching $450. Still a great rifle for the money but not the screaming value they were when they were $350 or less.

I put mine on lay away for two months to be able to afford it. I don't regret my purchase. Very smooth and very accurate. Paid about $600+ for it. And ya, it is a solidly built rifle. I have put several thousand rounds thru it. Mine likes copperwash hollowpoints but has fed almost anything I feed it from bulk ammo to CCI and again, I don't regret the purchase and neither will you. Get it before it's gone

I like it. How does this compare with a Henry? I'm wanting a .38/.357 lever gun.

I have an original Model 39 and it's still a super accurate, smooth little rifle. It's not as big, nor heavy as the A-series. There's no bluing left anywhere on it and there's a seam of rust-pitting running down the inside of the barrel, but that has no effect on its accuracy. The sights are super and it even has a folding peep sight on the receiver tang, but I don't use that...the regular sights are good enough.

At 50 yds, it'll hit matchbooks with boring regularity. Before reading this thread, I was thinking of getting a Henry .22 lever action, but now I'm wondering if I really need to when I have this one sitting here and not eating anything.

I had one of the newer 39-A's and didn't like it. The action wasn't smooth and it kept pinching my hand every time I cycled it. I got angry one day and wrapped it around a tree. Ended up giving what was left to a buddy of mine. Fuck the 39-A!

Is it new or used? If it's one of the new remlins I'd be more inclined to find one of the old proper marlin made ones
